Shot from a mundane, provincial past, Tess comes to New York in the stifling summer of 2006. Alone, knowing no one, living in a rented room in Williamsburg, she manages to land a job as a backwaiter at a celebrated downtown Manhattan restaurant. This begins the year we spend with Tess as she starts to navigate the chaotic, enchanting, punishing, and privileged life she has chosen as well as the remorseless and luminous city around her. What follows is her education.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I had heard about this book on the radio and was intrigued by the story. However, the narrator's read was grating to my ears. I couldn't finish the audio book because I found it so annoying.

How could the performance have been better?

Less vocal fry.

When summer comes around, it's off to the beach for Rosalind... and off to Maine with Aunt Claire for the rest of the Penderwick girls, as well as their old friend, Jeffrey. That leaves Skye as OAP (oldest available Penderwick) - a terrifying notion for all, but for Skye especially. Things look good as they settle into their cozy cottage, with a rocky shore, enthusiastic seagulls, a just-right corner store, and a charming next-door neighbor. But can Skye hold it together long enough to figure out Rosalind's directions about not letting Batty explode?

This summer the Penderwick sisters have a wonderful surprise: a holiday on the grounds of a beautiful estate called Arundel. Soon they are busy discovering the summertime magic of Arundel's sprawling gardens, treasure-filled attic, tame rabbits, and the cook who makes the best gingerbread in Massachusetts. But the best discovery of all is Jeffrey Tifton, son of Arundel's owner, who quickly proves to be the perfect companion for their adventures.

My girls and I loved this book, and we couldn't get enough of the Penderwick sisters and their little adventures. The characters are well developed and the storyline had something for my 7 year old, my 4 year old and even for me. The audio book has now pushed my eldest daughter to read the next one in the series.

The narrator does a good job of creating distinct voices for all 4 of the Penderwick girls, making it easy to hear their personalities come through. We can't wait to listen to the next adventures of the Penderwick sisters!
