It began on New Year's Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world's population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magic rose up in its place. Some of it is good, like the witchcraft worked by Lana Bingham, practicing in the loft apartment she shares with her lover, Max.

This is a gripping adventure chock-full of "you-are-there" moments. Fluckey has drawn on logs, reports, letters, interviews, and a recently discovered illegal diary kept by one of his torpedomen.

Here at Audible, we know just how much of an impact a voice can have on a story - taking simple words and filling them with elation, wonderment, tragedy, or pure satisfaction. We rely on our narrators every day to bring our favorite stories and characters to life - to introduce us to new authors and genres, or even to a new (perhaps longer) commute. And though our narrators are the best story tellers in the business, it's usually someone else's that they're telling.

What made the experience of listening to Invader the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed book one in the series but was not yet hooked. But book one has a cliff hanger ending that intrigued me enough to get book 2. I am now 8 books into the series and enjoying it very much.

What did you like best about this story?

The intellectual engagement. We spend half the book inside the main character's head. As such we are not just observers of the story but we become part of it, living it with him.

What does Daniel Thomas May bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Daniel May is a master of voice performance.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

This would have to be a series of movies. I think it would make a better TV series as many of the books end with a cliff hanger that draws you into the next book. I am 8 books in as I write this. I think it would make a great TV series.

Any additional comments?

Enjoying the ongoing story very much.

The first book in C.J.Cherryh's eponymous series, Foreigner begins an epic tale of the survivors of a lost spacecraft who crash-land on a planet inhabited by a hostile, sentient alien race. From its beginnings as a human-alien story of first contact, the Foreigner series has become a true science fiction odyssey, following a civilization from the age of steam through early space flight to confrontations with other alien species in distant sectors of space. It is the masterwork of a truly remarkable author.

If you could sum up Foreigner in three words, what would they be?

I liked the book but was not deeply engaged at the end. But I was curious enough to get the second book in the sequence and that fully locked me in. I am now 8 books into the series. What more can I say in the form of endorsement?

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I could easily have sat and enjoyed this in one sitting. Daniel May's performance is excellent .

Any additional comments?

If you like to get engaged in a large series of books that build on one another you will enjoy this one.
