Starts out with cruel physical abuse by a Father to a hero that hits his wife and rapes her on their wedding night. There are shallow side love stories thru out and a book filled with cruel men. I listened to the end in hopes the hero's brothers would eventually whip his butt and heroine would end up with one of them! This will be a return. Narration did not help the nasal voiced hero and simpering Alice was almost more than I could bare! I'm shocked that someone in Goodreads compared Judes writing style to Garwood....well certainly NOT this book!!!!!

For beautiful, witty Lavinia Gray, there’s only one thing worse than having to ask the appalling Parth Sterling to marry her: being turned down by him. Now the richest bachelor in England, Parth is not about to marry a woman as reckless and fashion-obsessed as Lavinia; he’s chosen a far more suitable bride. But when he learns of Lavinia's desperate circumstances, he offers to find her a husband. Even better, he’ll find her a prince. As usual, there’s no problem Parth can’t fix. But the more time he spends with the beguiling Lavinia, the more he finds himself wondering…

This was a GREAT series and I encourage you to give it a try. I am looking forward to Betsy and Jeremy story. A big beautiful family with imperfections, had some sizzle, sauce, and flaws and a lot of love. It will join my other favorite author Julie Garwoods books on my shelf to read re-read many times. Well done Eloise James and my all time favorite narrator Susan Duerdon. I actually found the series & Eloise James by looking for books Susan narrates.

The handsome, rakish heir to a dukedom, Lord Roland Northbridge Wilde - known to his friends as North - left England two years ago, after being jilted by Miss Diana Belgrave. He returns from war to find that he’s notorious: polite society has ruled him “too wild to wed”. Diana never meant to tarnish North’s reputation or his heart, but in her rush to save a helpless child, there was no time to consider the consequences of working as a governess in Lindow Castle. Now everyone has drawn the worst conclusions about the child’s father, and Diana is left with bittersweet regret.

I liked most of the characters but it took 3/4 of the book to get moving "felt like a car that kept trying to start". Seemed to repeat the situations several times . I had to make myself finish. Susan Duerden was wonderful as usual. If the beginning had been as strong as the end woukd have been a keeper.

Found the change from character to character disconcerting always took me a moment to figure out if I had missed something if the book skipped or what was going on. I think its a good basic story just hard to follow. and some parts really made me roll my eyes. A seasoned warrior in that time period would have known he had been poisoned and not gone outside alone. Emily breaking the latch in the dungeon....that was my point of being done.

Seemed it was a bit of a spoof! Not a keeper for me I wouldn't read it again. I can't tell if the narrators voice for the male role was part of my problem or if it was the character in general. I liked the fact he was imperfect and she saw past his injuries and loved him anyhow. ..a. beauty & the beast scenario; however, it came off as more if a comedy.
