This combined a crime of multiple murders, corruption and a legal thriller in an unusual way. My only issue is the narration, it is very slow, had it at 1.25 but could've/should've gone up from there, along with the lack of enthusiasm of the narrator. Liked the story but a different narrator would have made it that much better, I almost gave up on it but glad I didn't.

After narrowly surviving that adventure, Martin wants nothing more than a little peace and quiet. Unfortunately, the good doctor is out of luck thanks to the arrival of Marlene, the spirit of a nun killed in a fire that ravaged her medieval convent and home.

Never thought I would like it so much, sorry I waited so long to start this series of books. Now onto book 3.

melodramatic, redundant, at times boring and too long. Easily figured out this story nothing mysterious or thrilling about it. I listened to Fractured, which is a good listen and thought I'd try this one - Smoke. It did not deliver in the same way, reminded me of a poor Lifetime movie. This is too 'girly' for my taste, and then throwing in ballet moves,OMG, growing up I hated ballet, more fun playing cops and robbers with the boys. Obviously I will not be listening to anything else by this author.

The cases seem as different as their scenarios - late night in a tavern parking lot and early the next morning inside a bank. But a troubling theory soon unites them: Was the first crime's murder victim the second crime's mastermind?

After nearly 2 years & numerous attempts I finally decided to push through and finish this book, basically because I paid for it & long ago lost the opportunity to return it. Why did it take so long - the Narrator - his voice just grated on my ears, he basically read the story, with zero enthusiasm.
The synopsis was interesting and parts of the story were well written, had action & suspense, other parts were slower or not; after awhile I couldn't tell as the narrator was loud, had the wrong cadence & a complete lack of emotion, I just couldn't keep my focus on the story.
Because of the terrible narration, this is a book best read and not listened to.

What a horrible narration, high pitched feminine voices are used for all characters including the male characters, yes one was supposed to be gay but the voice was that of a ten year old girl with a case of giggles. The story started out okay but half way through it went off the rails and became implausible. What a waste of 4 hours, should have quit sooner. Thankfully I was able to return it for a refund.

This book was in my queue for an extended period of time due to the negative reviews, that was a big mistake, should have listened to it right away. Yes it has a few murder scenes, they were not graphic descriptions, just part of the story. And what a story it is, a lot of subterfuge, twists, suspense and just when you think it's over there's a most unexpected ending. A great listen.
