Beautifully written and thought provoking story set in a fictional dystopian time period (1990's or 80s). The story unfolds from the perspective of the narrator (Offred - of Fred). The history of how events unfolded to create the setting is explained in further detail much later in the story. It's an interesting history created by Atwood but at the same time familar in the real world. Themes of misogyny, class systems, patriarchy, and ecological disasters pervade the story. A great read, highly recommended!

If the past is prologue, then George R. R. Martin's masterwork - the most inventive and entertaining fantasy saga of our time - warrants one hell of an introduction. At long last, it has arrived with The World of Ice & Fire. This volume is a comprehensive history of the Seven Kingdoms, providing vividly constructed accounts of the epic battles, bitter rivalries, and daring rebellions that lead to the events of A Song of Ice and Fire and HBO's Game of Thrones.

Beautifully written adventure of one little hobbit and 14 dwarves by master storyteller J.R.R. Tolkien. I enjoyed following Bilbao and his dwarvish company through the many obstacles, victories and defeats they encountered in their quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the evil dragon Smaug and the subsequent battle that ensues. Tolkien's Middle Earth and it's inhabitants are richly detailed and interesting in their own right. Luckily he wrote many more books set in this mysterious and fantastical world for all of us to enjoy.

At some point every one of us embarks on a journey to find love. We meet people, date, get into and out of relationships, all with the hope of finding someone with whom we share a deep connection. This seems standard now, but it's wildly different from what people did even just decades ago. Single people today have more romantic options than at any point in human history.

Very funny and interesting read from well known comedian Aziz Ansari and Eric Klinenberg. Ansari's brand of humor lightens up the more scientific side of romance and helps to navigate the various angles they delve into. This includes a history of dating, modern dating practices, real life anecdotes, marriage, cheating and love in other parts of the world. Ansari occasionally draws examples from his life but mostly he recounts stories from others who freely participated in discussions and surveys that were administered during the research process of writing this book. I think that's the strength of the story as reference to statistics and other research findings can be hard to relate to.

The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people.

This book shines a light on the real rules of holding your own and pushing back for what is rightfully yours. Drawing on interviews with high-level leaders, Rezvani offers listeners the truth about how women have asked their way to the top.

The rest of the chapters focus on techniques and examples. I reread these chapters as I was preparing for job interviews and critical business negotiations.

I highly recommend this book to any female professional looking for guidance on this subject.

Excellent book from Ray Anderson on his personal journey implementing sustainable and environmentally friendly business and manufacturing processes. His experiences, triumphs and failures lend wisdom to an industry that is challenged with staying competitive and relevant. He offers many stories from outside and inside his business on important sustainability themes. Many metrics and studies are also presented to drive points home.

The chapter I found most inspiring was social sustainability. This is a point that I hadn't paid much attention to and is a critical pillar to creating and sustaining a healthy community. Again, he offers many real and touching stories to give life to the topic.

I've purchased copies of this book for several friends as I believe his story resonates with business professionals of all backgrounds.

But in TouchPoints, Conant and Norgaard argue that these - and every point of contact with other people - are overlooked opportunities for leaders to increase their impact and promote their organization's strategy and values. Through previously untold stories from Conant's tenure as CEO of Campbell Soup Company and Norgaard's vast consulting experience, the authors show that a leader's impact and legacy are built through hundreds, even thousands, of interactive moments in time.

Conant's research and stories shared by other leaders emphasize this point over and over. He also spends time addressing different management styles and how to mold oneself's style to better suit the needs of their team and organization.
