Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. Her quest for knowledge transformed her.

Stealth. Gorgon. Regenerator. Cerberus. Zzzap. The Mighty Dragon. They were heroes. Vigilantes. Crusaders for justice, using their superhuman abilites to make Los Angeles a better place. Then the plague of living death spread around the globe. Despite the best efforts of the superheroes, the police, and the military, the hungry corpses rose up and overwhelmed the country. The population was decimated, heroes fell, and the city of angels was left a desolate zombie wasteland like so many others.

What made the experience of listening to Ex-Heroes the most enjoyable?

Great flow of the story, great characters

What other book might you compare Ex-Heroes to and why?

I'm just listening to Hyperion, where each character tells their jewel of a story in the overall story, and it reminds me a little of that.

What about Jay Snyder and Khristine Hvam ’s performance did you like?

I liked having a male and female voice, but I liked the man better

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The end, but I won't spoil it.

Any additional comments?

I don't like zombie books, wouldn't have picked this one if I had realized it, but ended up loving it.

Would you listen to The Well of Ascension again? Why?

Probably - he builds his characters in such a way as to constantly be challenging them, and I want to hear that again.

What other book might you compare The Well of Ascension to and why?

Sanderson is in a league of his own - I think some of the more fantastical Stephen King might have some of the similar ethical challenges and character development as the Mistborn series.

Which scene was your favorite?

Can't give it away ;)

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When the two lovers really learn to trust each other, even when that trust might be leading them astray - profound example of a good, strong relationship.

Mars is supposed to be dead. Bizarre quakes are rumbling over the long-dormant tectonic plates of the planet, disrupting its trillion-dollar mining operations and driving scientists past the edges of theory and reason. However, when rocks shake off their ancient dust and begin to roll seemingly of their own volition carving canals as they converge to form a towering structure amid the ruddy terrain, Lt. Jain and her JSC team realize that their routine geological survey of a Martian cave system is anything but. The only clues they have stem from the emissions of a mysterious blue radiation, and a 300-year-old journal that is writing itself.
