Living at the limits of our ordinary perception, mosses are a common but largely unnoticed element of the natural world. Gathering Moss is a beautifully written mix of science and personal reflection that invites listeners to explore and learn from the elegantly simple lives of mosses.

I couldn’t get past the narrator’s slow, too-placid delivery style, one better suited to leading a meditation or bedtime reading to a child. Sorry, if a narrator has almost put me to sleep twice before the end of the first chapter, I’m not going to finish the audiobook. I might give an ebook or physical version a try, though.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the show, but this goes soooo much more into depth about the background and history of Oak Island, and of the principle personages involved in the search over the years. Enjoyed the audiobook so much, I ordered a physical copy of the book for our collection!

In Men Explain Things to Me, Rebecca Solnit takes on the conversations between men who wrongly assume they know things and wrongly assume women don't. The ultimate problem, she shows in her comic, scathing essay, is female self-doubt and the silencing of women. Rebecca Solnit is the author of fourteen books about civil society, popular power, uprisings, art, environment, place, pleasure, politics, hope, and memory, most recently The Faraway Nearby, a book on empathy and storytelling.

Five years ago, the US Space Force became a reality. And while those writing the checks took things very seriously, the other military branches did not. As a result, Space Force was populated by undesirables: men and women who made too many mistakes, didn't follow the rules, or...slept with the wrong general's daughter. Three times. On camera. It was a mistake, okay? My name is Captain Ethan Stone, a decorated member of SEAL Team Six turned Space Force "recruit".

In this ferociously imaginative novel, abortion is once again illegal in America, in vitro fertilization is banned, and the Personhood Amendment grants rights of life, liberty, and property to every embryo. In a small Oregon fishing town, five very different women navigate these new barriers alongside age-old questions surrounding motherhood, identity, and freedom.

One detail bugs the hell out of me. Diabetes is HYPERglycemia (high blood sugar) and the author has repeatedly called it HYPOglycemia (low blood sugar). Diabetics use insulin to decrease high blood sugar. Giving a HYPOglycemic insulin can lower blood sugar to a fatal level. Most people won’t care, but if an easily researchable detail like that is wrong, it throws doubt on the veracity of whatever else an author claims — even in fiction. Sorry, but that’s the type of thing that can ruin a story for me, especially in a series where medical details are pertinent to the plot line.
