Franchesca Ramsey didn't set out to be an activist. Or a comedian. Or a commentator on identity, race, and culture, really. But then her YouTube video "What White Girls Say...to Black Girls" went viral. Faced with an avalanche of media requests, fan letters, and hate mail, she had two choices: Jump in and make her voice heard or step back and let others frame the conversation. After a crash course in social justice and more than a few foot-in-mouth moments, she realized she had a talent and passion for breaking down injustice in America in ways that could make people listen and engage.

I've been following Franchesca Ramsey from the beginning. I've watched her grow, change and admittedly, I've done the same along with her. While the internet doesn't come with a "How To" manual, this is the closest we get. What do you do when your mother in law goes full MAGA? What about when your coworker starts yelling about "black on black crime"? WTEQ helps you love yourself on and offline and handle people's interactions in a way that will keep you sane and still with a friend group. Her narration is as beautiful as she is (of course we need to mention that she is always fly, i mean look at the cover).

While Comey may never escape the perception that he dramatically influenced the 2016 election and thus led to the election of Trump, he makes a few cases in this phenomenal book.

One, he did influence it. He did so for what he views as the integrity and independence of the FBI, but he still did it.

Two, the things that we are currently seeing with American politics must not be normalized. They must not be seen as who we are or who we have always been and there must be a way to challenge them.

Three, that our institutions are lasting and strong.

This book is essential and phenomenal. It is an illuminating look into the FBI, DOJ and inner workings of 3 different administrations. Where "Fire and Fury" was like Pringles, indulgent and a little bit of a guilty pleasure, "A Higher Loyalty" is a sustaining meal. Party lines aside, it is a must read.

Donald Trump's presidency has raised a question that many of us never thought we'd be asking: Is our democracy in danger? Harvard professors Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt have spent more than twenty years studying the breakdown of democracies in Europe and Latin America, and they believe the answer is yes. Democracy no longer ends with a bang--in a revolution or military coup--but with a whimper: the slow, steady weakening of critical institutions, such as the judiciary and the press, and the gradual erosion of long-standing political norms.

While some may see this book as an attack on our current administration, it is truly about the norms that have been broken not just by him, but by others in governmental power and how it has eroded the foundations of our country.

"How Democracies Die" is a well crafted comparative study in what happens when leaders don't abide by those soft rules of a society and people do resistance in a way that burns down the institutions or fail to stand up at all. It is a necessary read for our current and future political affairs.

The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.
