Lois Clary is a software engineer at General Dexterity, a San Francisco robotics company with world-changing ambitions. She codes all day and collapses at night, her human contact limited to the two brothers who run the neighborhood hole-in-the-wall from which she orders dinner every evening. Then, disaster! Visa issues. The brothers close up shop, and fast. But they have one last delivery for Lois: their culture, the sourdough starter used to bake their bread. She must keep it alive, they tell her - feed it daily, play it music, and learn to bake with it.

This is different and charming. It’s just bread but it has a history and a very quirky future and along the way a dollop of world domination.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who has not read a lot of science fiction

Would you ever listen to anything by Robert Kroese again?

I might give it a try, but I'm not optimistic

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Kate Rudd?

Anyone who doesn't try so hard to sound "male" if female or "female" if male. She sounded strangled rather than realistic. Most Audiobook listeners don't expect a performer to go to unnatural lengths to sound like the other gender.

Any additional comments?

This author gave me the impression that he was trying too hard. Comedy is fine and I really appreciate humor, but this was contrived.

Would you listen to The Bone Garden again? Why?

Why read a mystery again when you already know who done it? Because from start to finish it was just so entertaining, interesting, scary, fun, and full of life. I'll probably read it again sometime just to have the pleasure of it and I rarely reread anything. I could mention details from the book trying to entice you but wouldn't you rather have it all new and fresh? OK. Well written, well researched, in many ways informative, and a nice, tidy and somewhat sweet ending.

A starship hurtles through the emptiness of space. Its destination — unknown. Its purpose — a mystery. Now, one man wakes up. Ripped from a dream of a new home — a new planet and the woman he was meant to love in his arms — he finds himself wet, naked, and freezing to death. The dark halls are full of monsters but trusting other survivors he meets might be the greater danger.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

While I was reading this book I was aware of and glad of being smart enough to figure out what was going on...that is to say, it took some thought and close reading. I can imagine people just putting this down and not picking it up again. I stuck it out to the end and was not entirely satisfied because in some ways the end did not justify the means. I think the ideas could have been presented in a more lucid fashion and that would have given the reader more opportunity to think about them whereas in this book it was even less than implied until the end and then one was left to infer rather than know. I know this is a vapid sounding review but I assure you, it fits the book. That being said, I will probably listen to it again sometime just to make sure it said what I think it said.....ye gads..I'll just stop talking!

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Although born to rule, Aidan lives as a scribe in a remote Irish monastery on the far, wild edge of Christendom. Secure in work, contemplation, and dreams of the wider world, a miracle bursts into Aidan's quiet life. He is chosen to accompany a small band of monks on a quest to the fabled city of Byzantium, where they are to present the beautiful and costly hand-illuminated Book of Kells to the emperor of all Christendom.

What made the experience of listening to Byzantium the most enjoyable?

Twenty five hours is along time to spend on any book and only worth it if the story is engaging and interesting..this is. But one has to enjoy well realized and carefully thought out and thoroughly researched books. The scene where the men are running to get out of the slave mines before the great door shuts them in forever is one of the most harrowing I have ever read....and I have read a lot. This is a great commuting book.

There is no real depth to this story, no great ideas to live by, really nothing of socially redeeming value but was it ever fun. Just sit back, put your feet up and go along for the ride.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

The only people who will enjoy this book are those with the patience and forbearance to listen to the nearly incomprehensible dialect the narrator chose to use. Think bad Scottish accent with a mouth full of marbles while chewing dry crackers. I have tried three times to listen to this and turn it off after I realize I still can not understand what is being said. Perhaps it is a good book but unless I read a hard copy I will never know. It seems to me that someone should have listened to the reader before they put this book on-line. Unfortunately, I had the book for quite a while before I started to read it so I can't return it. That, by the way, is 15$ gone forever because of the garbled reading. I expect more from Audible. I almost feel that this book constitutes a breach of contract.
