I guess it was inevitable that a series about a high society lady in the 1920's would eventually have to include a story about Egyptology which was a craze at the time. It was also inevitable that such a book would have so many parallels with Elizabeth Peter’s series of books about the exploits of the fictional character Amelia Peabody. However, what was not so expected but in fact refreshing to see was the references made in the Story behind the Story section of the book giving recognition to Elizabeth Peters. This book was quite good, best so far in the series. If you enjoyed this book and subject matter, I encourage you to look up The Amelia Peabody series. Over the more than 18 or so books in the series, it covers the 40+ years of the lives of the characters, weaving a complex story line with major characters fading into and out of the story line. Sara Rosett’s book The Egyptian Antiquities Murder is a great introduction to these books but a great read in its own right.

Certainly not a masterpiece but decent light entertainment. You do get the feeling that it was pushed out to get to the next book in the series. The introduction of the next installment at the end of this book seems a cheap trick.

So much either glossed over or left out. However, much more than the average American learns in a public school world history class. comparatively about the same as what a Brit learns about American history. I didn't see it in any way as irreverent. Pleasurable is a very subjective term. I wouldn't say pleasurable, but I would say interesting. For scholars of history, it offers little new insight. So all in all, a decent introduction to British history.

Almost like a trilogy wrapped up in to one volume. Multiple storyline plots intertwine to create a novel that you simply can't put down. one of the best historical fiction authors treats you to an interesting array of facts about geography, science, medicine, and history amounst other things. The afterword, which should definitely be read last provides interesting facts and insights into the writing of the book. most exciting is the fact that more novels in the series will be forthcoming. it will be interesting to see how the author tops this one.

So happy to find this great author. While not quite up to the level of the previous book in the series it is by far great reading. just slightly predictable in some parts.

This one twists and turns, many nail biting scenes. Some parts predictable but all of it very entertaining. Need to start the next one right away.
