Carivel was born female, but she has been secretly living as a boy for years in her adoptive village of Draebard. The last thing she needs is to fall for not one, but two unattainable men—a fierce warrior and a reluctant wolf-shifter with a horrific past. Now, the Alyrion Empire is poised to invade, and Carivel must choose whether to keep her secret or reveal it—not only to the men she loves, but also to the powerful female ruler whose army could help protect Draebard during the coming war.

I really tried to give this book a chance but it completely missed the mark on what gender fluidity is and how to convey it. The fact it is marketed as such is why my review score is so low.

... in the previous books in the series. She is okay but cannot convey both male and female voices as well so I had to rewind quite a few times because I would get lost in who was talking during a conversation. The narrator did a great job differentiating male and female voices. It was also unsettling to go straight from one book to the next and have the narrator's be different.

When you listen to a story you want to be pulled into the world. However, the female narrator pauses for a noticeable amount after each coma and end of the sentence. It kept pulling me out of the story. I will probably keep going with the series, just maybe not the audio books.

Big cliff hanger at the end though. stops in the middle of the scene. The book starts off slow with every single detail and movement described, but eventually that stops.

In a matter of seconds, my entire world changed, and it was in that moment that I stopped living and simply began to exist. In my grief, I sent a letter to the first boy I ever loved. I hoped in writing it I'd find some peace from the nightmare I was living, some solace in my anger. I didn't expect him to write back. I wasn't prepared for his words, and I certainly wasn't ready for the impact this soldier would have on my life. A deep-rooted hate transformed into friendship, and then molded into a love like I'd never known before.
