Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. Her quest for knowledge transformed her.

Every teacher, doctor, school nurse, citizen who cares about the well being of children should listen to this book. This young woman is a heroine. She benefited from caring educators. The author and narrator seemed perfectly synced.
I couldn’t lay it down. One of my favorite “listens” in the past few years.

A young woman is found strangled in the stairwell of a college library, only her sneakers missing. With no physical evidence, no signs of sexual assault, and no witnesses, all the police have to go on are the three men who were in the library with her: her boyfriend and two campus security guards...all of whom have secrets, none of whom can be proven guilty. Five years later, ex-FBI profiler Pierce Quincy and his wife, former police officer Rainie Conner, agree to consult on the still-unsolved case.

I don’t mind a story that leads you into the next in the series. This was really narrated well. The last 5% was rushed with no real resolution and difficult to follow. I read the reviews of #2 and #3: seems to be the formula. I LOVED the Naturalist series but I am going to pass on this. Reminds me of Jane Hawk Series.
Mayne is brilliant- -I listen for pleasure not frustration.

In Braving the Wilderness, Brown redefines what it means to truly belong in an age of increased polarization.

Perhaps you already have it together with a perfectly authentic life. This book can help you to help others when they want to confide their story.
Plus she has perfect timing with humor.

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

Narrator told the story so beautifully. She was young, old, male and female. Each voice was true to the character they represented. Strong vibrant eloquent artist,
Then there is the book itself. The author has managed to take us through tragedy, love and hope with purely wonderful writing and without gimmicks. The reader's emotions develop as the story develops. This is a story that must be told now and until we all learn that that we need to love each other. Until young brown and black men do not have to fear going out for skittles, this story needs to be told. For now this story tells it best.
