Such a gorgeously written tale of a very overdone topic. The prose is amazing, the characters are interesting and the abuse scenes are cloaked as to not be gratuitous - yet we know what horror is happening. This book is - just wow.

Ailsa Calder has inherited half of a house. The other half belongs to a man who disappeared without a trace 27 years ago - her father. Leaving London behind to settle the inheritance from her mother's estate, Ailsa returns to her childhood home, nestled amongst the craggy peaks of the Scottish Highlands, joined by the half sister who's almost a stranger to her. Ailsa can't escape the claustrophobic feeling that the house itself is watching her - as if her past hungers to consume her.

Such a rare gem of character and atmosphere. Such a great book. I’m not into ghost stuff but this is so much more than even the suggestion of ghosts - I tried to explain the character dynamics, time confusion and haunting elements and failed - just read the book!

This funny, sad, super-honest, all-true story of Chelsea Handler’s year of self-discovery features a nerdily brilliant psychiatrist, a shaman, four Chow Chows, some well-placed security cameras, various family members (living and departed), friends, assistants, and a lot of edibles.

This is an incredible journey through the art of therapy —- told by a therapist who sees a therapist — and the lessons she learns from him and her patients through the years. Expertly crafted, funny, self-deprecating and brutally honest, this is a must listen. I laughed, cried and took deep breathes as Gottlieb wove her life’s work into a book that anyone in therapy or in pain will most likely find astonishingly illuminating in their own lives. I didn’t want it to end.

In 2010, human rights reporter Mac McClelland left Haiti after covering the lingering devastation of the earthquake. Back home, McClelland finds herself imagining vivid scenes of violence. She can't sleep or stop crying. It becomes clear that she is suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, triggered by her trip and seemingly exacerbated by her experiences in the other charged places she'd reported from, places from where she thought she'd escaped emotionally unscathed.

This is the bravest most honest picture of someone struggling with not just the fallout from trauma but the societal bullshit that people with these conditions deal with too. Not only that but the deep level of suffering, self-hatred and terrifying thoughts of self harm that can result from PTSD. Engrossing, terrifying, relatable and so goddamn brave. Way to go, girl. You have helped more people than you know.

Ted Fullilove, aka Mr. Peanut, is not like other Ivy League grads. He shares an apartment with Goldberg, his beloved battery-operated fish, sleeps on a bed littered with yellow legal pads penned with what he hopes will be the next great American novel, and spends the waning malaise-filled days of the Carter administration at Yankee Stadium, waxing poetic while slinging peanuts to pay the rent.

I love this book - so much. Duchovny loves words and my pride can be a bit wounded by how much I need to look up certain references, but he makes up for it by so many hilarious bits of misunderstanding and clumsiness that comes from his protagonist’s self-loathing and lack serious game. The prose can be a bit, um, verbose? But once you find the characters’ vibes, it’s a sort of devastatingly moving father-son cuss-fest love story that will stay with me for a long time. Enjoy!
