A guide for writers who like to think deeply about the philosophical content of their work and all the minutiae about how they could possibly present it in a structured form to the world. Rand's guidance here will teach you to be a better thinker at the same time it is teaching you to be a better writer, as one logically precedes the other. I very much appreciated this as a deep and dense alternative to the fluffy and redundant writing advice that dominates this area.

Venus and Her Lover is a book that defies categorization. The author’s tale weaves many elements of philosophy, world travel, tantric sex, spirituality, and psychology that are bound to incite many new seeds of inspiration for those who make it through this decadent web of experiences. Though this is only the first volume of two, by itself it contains enough of Becca’s adventure that it should prompt serious inquiry into many of society’s accepted truths about the history of sexuality, traditional gender roles, and far more topics that are extremely pertinent to our world in perpetual struggle for dominance and power. Highly recommended for anyone seeking profound new insight into new thought and new paradigms.

In 2015, millennial author and cultural anthropologist Veronica Kirin drove 11,000 miles across more than 40 states to interview the last living members of the Greatest Generation. Stories of Elders is the result of her years of work to capture and share their perspective for generations to come. Stories of Elders preserves the wisdom, thoughts, knowledge, and advice of the people who make up one of America’s finest generations, including the Silent Generation. Their stories include the devastation that came from major events in US history like World War I and more.

In our digital world, it's not often that we consider the wisdom of the people who grew up in the decades before the things we now think of as essential to our lives. Seeing how Veronica Kirin was able to piece together and analyze the testimonies and advice of America’s oldest living elders was a fascinating read. I feel like I understand now why we call them the “greatest generation”.

Despite the subtitle’s emphasis on technology, the subjects covered in these interviews and memoirs reach far beyond the introduction of electricity, automobiles, and the internet into society. These are stories of how American society and culture have changed in ways that Millennials like myself cannot really appreciate through the facts provided by U.S. history books.

By reading the true stories of members of the greatest generation who grew during the dust bowl or both of the world wars, I get a sense of really having been there for it all. Can you really imagine what it was like to live during the great depression? I’ve lived around the world, from very developed to very undeveloped places, and it’s still hard for me to really picture what life was like back in that portion of American history before the advent of easy transportation and the ability to research or purchase whatever we need as soon as we need it.

I think that in time Stories of Elders will prove to be a quite historically important book that has captured a collection of unique voices at the last moment of history where it was still possible to do so. We are quickly running out of our nation’s centennials and centenarians. I am glad for my own sake and the sake of my children and all future generations that no matter what changes the future of technology and social issues bring us, we will still have this little window of life at a simpler time.

Frankly, Veronica Kirin’s book has even inspired me to take a greater interest in cultural anthropology as whole. There’s a lot of history and cultural left out there for us to discover and document.

From the author of 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos comes a provocative hypothesis that explores the connection between what modern neuropsychology tells us about the brain and what rituals, myths, and religious stories have long narrated. A cutting-edge work that brings together neuropsychology, cognitive science, and Freudian and Jungian approaches to mythology and narrative, Maps of Meaning presents a rich theory that makes the wisdom and meaning of myth accessible to the critical modern mind.

Loving Ordinary Life is written for us: living, emotional people. We all want to live a happy life, but we can easily fall into a state of despondency. We prefer to smile, but more often we frown. We like being inspired, but most likely, we can't recall the last time when we were. There are many books and courses about self-motivation and inspiration. You might have heard hundreds of platitudes and affirmations. Each of them sounds valid but their utility is limited when you actually find yourself stuck in a pit of pain and despair.

It's interesting to listen to a book which is clearly meant to be enjoyed visually in the full context of its illustrations merely read aloud by its author. Anastasia Petrenko's voice lends a meditative and reflective quality to her original work, and I'm very glad she did not hire someone else to narrate it in her stead. The authenticity of her accent and slightly uncommon speaking style makes this a quite unique listen, and the recording quality is excellent despite its short length.

I recommend keeping this little treasure on your Audible app and relistening to it from time to time when you need a reminder to stop and enjoy all aspects of life, even the negative. It is one of the best books on happiness, motivation, and inspiration to enjoy with relative ease. If you really love it, get the paperback as a visual companion and permanent physical keepsake of its lessons. I can't wait to hear what comes next from this new author.
