A frustrated, unhappy wife. Her much younger, attentive lover. A husband who degrades and ignores her. The stage is set for a love-triangle murder that shatters family illusions and lays bare a quiet family community's seedy secret world of sex, sin, and swinging. Better Off Dead, the latest true crime book from New York Times best-selling author Michael Fleeman, strips away the pleasant veneer of the Silver Lakes neighborhood in California's high desert to tell a shocking story about a headline-grabbing crime.

This was an ok book, but it seemed to be lacking. There was no real character development, and the story itself was vague. Kinda bland.
The narration was good, with one exception....the tone used for the detective made him sound like a game show host. It was weird. However, that would not keep me from trying another audible narrated by Michael Kinzie.

It took a long time for me to actually buy this audible because I was put off by the sample narration...I had thought the narrator was an awful choice. However, as it turns out, Pete Cross, did a fabulous job! His performance was on point!! My next listen is also narrated by him and I cant wait!
The book itself was very well written and flowed nicely. Factual but not at all boring. Its focus is on the two women, not the murders. If you like forensic details and breakdown of the crime itself, then this is not the book for you. This is more about the murderers and their personalities, etc. I think its a great book/listen!

On March 24, 1987, the Philadelphia Police Department received a phone call from a woman who stated that she had been held captive for the last four months. When police officers arrived at the pay phone from which the call was made, Josephina Rivera told them that she and three other women had been held captive in a basement by a man named Gary Heidnik. He imprisoned women in chains, in the filth and stench of a hole dug under his home.

Two small brothers named Jakub and Ondrej, nine and seven years old respectively, were revealed to have suffered confinement, mutilation, psychological brutality, and cannibalism at the hands of several people.

It was hard to listen to this audible. It was horribly put together and sounded more like a school book report. The story was choppy and seemed to jump around. The two little boys were hardly even discussed...the focus was more on Barbara. Although I dont believe Ernie Sprance to be a bad narrator, he did not do a great job with this narration. His tone was all wrong and he spoke a little too fast, which at times made it confusing. I was very disappointed!

I think the narration added a lot to this book! Very well done!! The book itself was also great. The author did an amazing job of allowing the reader to feel her pain without going into too much graphic detail of abuse. It is a sad story but I am amazed at how the author handled living through it. A very strong woman! Thank you for sharing your story! I recommend this audible!

I enjoyed this book! It keeps your attention and there was not too much filler. It is about the detectives journey to find and convict the murderer. The author did a great job of giving just enough information about the victims and their family to allow you to empathize, but the main story was catching the bad guy and the detectives' struggles. I would recommend this book/audible!

This was a great read/listen! The author did an amazing job of giving background information on all the characters. It really allows you to feel as if you knew them and why/how things developed the way they did. There are different types of true crime stories. Some focus on the brutality of the murder and the person(s) who committed it and the pursuit of justice. Others tell the story in a whole with the focus being on all involved. This story is of the later. At first the detailed descriptions of the people were long and maybe a little confusing, but it doesn't take much time to realize the importance of it. I would recommend this book, with the advice to hang in if at first it seems too much...it really is an interesting story!
