When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days - as he has done before - and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, it becomes clear that there is more to Quine's disappearance than his wife realizes. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows.

I finished Cuckoo’s Calling in 3 days and ranted and raved about it to everyone as the best book I’d read in a long time. Was so excited to see it was a series and bought all 3 available. Then came Silkworm. I took over 2 weeks to get through it. Ending was incredibly disappointing and storyline just dragged. If you’re interested in reading Strike interview 8 people you can’t keep straight for 17 hours, this is the book for you.

After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: his sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

I think this may have been one of the first books read by this narrator. He speaks very quickly, though still clearly. I think a more seasoned reader would have read this book in 5 hours.

That said, he did a good job with various voices.

Hard to piece together exactly what's going on in the world of the story. Characters are flat and the plot is predictable. I thought this would be a powerful book to read, but was incredibly disappointed. The idea is great, but poorly executed.

I listen to a lot of podcasts on my commute, so when I saw this for free on Audible I figured I would give it a try. The story is well done, fast-paced, and all the characters are very relatable. It reminds me a bit of a Ken Burns type documentary with the subject matter and is very tasteful though there is moaning in the background at times so be advised.

The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first Lo's stay is nothing but pleasant: The cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, and gray skies fall.
