The plane circled in the dark. Joe Pickett could just make out down below a figure in the snow and timber, and then three other figures closing in. There was nothing he could do about it. And Joe knew that he might be their next target. The Cates family had always been a bad lot. Game warden Joe Pickett had been able to strike a fierce blow against them when the life of his daughter April had been endangered, but he'd always wondered if there'd be a day of reckoning.

The ring is tiny, for a woman, and it has her initials engraved on the inside. Reacher wonders what unlucky circumstance made her give up something she earned over four hard years. He decides to find out. And find the woman. And return her ring. Why not?

20+ Reacher novels, great plots and characters all, this one continues true to the saga. Reacher fans should it.

For me, a genuine fan, the Reacher edge and the customery jeopardy he faces was a bit lackluster in this one. Reacher lacked his usual intensity and focus, the bad guys had no bite, and the love scene was very strange.

Regardless, I still enjoyed the book, especially Dick Hill's familiar way of bringing Reacher alive. I will be a sad man when Lee Child writes his last Jack Reacher novel.

When Thomas Jefferson became president in 1801, America faced a crisis. The new nation was deeply in debt and needed its economy to grow quickly, but its merchant ships were under attack. Pirates from North Africa's Barbary coast routinely captured American sailors and held them as slaves, demanding ransom and tribute payments far beyond what the new country could afford.

He was a man of quiet faith and determined courage who lived by an unwavering code of honor. He was a firm believer that the good guys would win and the bad guys would lose, although it didn't mean there wouldn't be casualties or injuries in the process of winning. EMP survivor Chris Chandler wasn't one to back away from overwhelming odds, and as of now, the odds weren't stacked in his favor. One way or the other, people were going to get hurt here or killed.

This short series might have been better presented as one complete book with one primary focus and fewer similar characters and story lines. It still works ok as a 3-book series, especially if you are hungry for a post EMP story. And despite any literary flaws, I still enjoyed the story and the characters.

The celebrated 2010 HBO miniseries The Pacific, winner of eight Emmy Awards, was based on two classic books about the War in the Pacific, Helmet for My Pillow and With The Old Breed. Audible Studios, in partnership with Playtone, the production company co-owned by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, and creator of the award-winning HBO series Band of Brothers, John Adams, and The Pacific, as well as the HBO movie Game Change, has created new recordings of these memoirs, narrated by the stars of the miniseries.

This is a very descriptive account of the war in the Pacific during WWII, particularly the USMC, an especially tough brand of American warrior, the elite of their day.

I recommend this book to veterans of other eras (I am one), most of you will be humbled, and to the offspring of Pacific theater combat veterans who never told you about their experiences.

The irresistible David Freed’s first mystery is a stay-up-late-to-finish thriller. Based in sunny Rancho Bonita - “California’s Monaco”, as the city’s moneyed minions like to call it - Cordell Logan is a literate, sardonic flight instructor and aspiring Buddhist with dwindling savings and a shadowy past. When his beautiful ex-wife, Savannah, shows up out of the blue to tell him that her husband has been murdered in Los Angeles, Logan is quietly pleased. Savannah’s late husband, after all, is Arlo Echevarria, the man she left Logan for.
