At 31, Tricia Downing was in the best shape of her life. In the summer of 2000, Tricia, an avid cyclist, drove across the country for what amounted to 18 races in 23 days. She returned from her adventure to a fresh start: a new job awaited her, and determined to make the next summer the year she would make her mark on the world of cycling, she began a rigorous training strategy. But on September 17, 2000, Tricia Downing's life took a detour. While training on her bicycle, Tricia collided with a car that turned directly in her path, and instantly became paralyzed from the chest down.

This true story of Tricia’s life takes you along with her through the accident, the diagnosis, the hospitals, her surgeries, therapy, and recovery, her emotions, her challenges, and her relationships. She is very honest in telling the story of her tragedy, even revealing her negative emotions and lack of hope for her future. She gives a glimpse of the everyday difficulties of being paralyzed.

As she chronicles her journey out of depression and into her new reality, the reader begins to see the spunky competitive Tricia come alive again as she meets challenges head on, forges new paths, and sets almost impossible goals.

I recommend this book to any racer, cyclist, or person looking for inspiration and hope in difficult circumstances.

As a aide note, I understand why she and her friend Matt needed to write the letters to the woman who caused the accident. I’m sure it was therapeutic to write those things to her and to get the anger and hate off their chests. But I would have liked to have read that they also were able to then forgive the woman and embrace the ultimate hope that Christ brings to our lives through His love and forgiveness.

The narrator did a great job on the audiobook, although she sounded too young to be believable as the author of the book.

This is a handy tool for learning / relearning Spanish words. But I must admit that with the audio version, it's difficult to just listen to the word and then hear it used in a long sentence in Spanish, when you may not understand the rest of the words in the sentence. The second time through the sentence it is read faster in Spanish and then the sentence is read in English. I would have preferred much shorter sentences. I also would have preferred the English translation be read between the slow and fast Spanish translations for easier audible understanding.
I would recommend the audio version of this book for people refreshing their use of the language, but not for those trying to learn for the first time. You can download the print version of the book to follow along, but it would take too much ink and paper to print the whole book and so it's not practical to always sit at your computer when listening to the audiobook.
Overall a very good tool and well narrated.

I very much enjoyed the plot of this book. It kept my attention and I was entertained. I haven’t read too many books written about or from the perspective of teachers and I enjoyed it. I am hoping for future books with these characters.

The narrator did a great job of performing so it was a pleasant experience all around.

Abby was young, only a junior in high school. Her entire life waited before her, with big plans to go to college. Her parents were strict, stricter than most parents, and sex before marriage was not tolerated in her church. Jimmy was a high school senior with a basketball scholarship to an ivy-league college. When they meet at a party, one that Abby snuck out of the house to attend, their lives head down completely different paths when she ends up pregnant. Jimmy is determined to stand by Abby.

What did you love best about Twisted Faith?

I loved that Pastor Dave at New Hope Christian Church cared so deeply for her with true Christian love, and then that love spread throughout the other key church members who happened to come during the crisis that evening. It exemplifies how powerful Jesus' love is.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Twisted Faith?

The most memorable moments are the extreme punishment Abby received from her parents. It cuts through to the core, because you know how wrong it is, but they are executing the punishment thinking they are doing the "right thing". It is so twisted. And the sad part is knowing that this actually does happen at times in cults and even in some "christian" homes. Such a terrible thing to twist scripture.

Which scene was your favorite?

When you find out that Abby's boyfriend is not dead!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Abby's boyfriend said he purchased a promise ring as well. When her boyfriend's parents showed up at the church to love and accept her.

Any additional comments?

Narration was done with excellence!

Question for author: Abby thought her beloved was dead because that's what her parents told her, but what about all her friends and classmates she ran into. Why did they also think he was dead?

What did you love best about Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass?

I was awed by hearing first hand from Frederick Douglass' words about his life and all the challenges. Ultimately he succeeds in escaping and gaining his freedom, but life was so difficult

What was one of the most memorable moments of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass?

The unbelievable way white men could read the Bible and pray to God and then turn around and treat slaves and women deplorably.

Which character – as performed by Arthur Grey – was your favorite?

Frederick himself .

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The terrible way slaves were treated always moves me to anger.

Any additional comments?

I really like Arthur's voice for the historic narrative, I just wished that this book was narrated by an African American male.
I was disappointed at the mispronunciation of the biblical character "Job".

This book was well written, well performed and kept my attention, I loved the perspective the author used and I learned history at the same time. I enjoyed the voices the narrated used.

What other book might you compare Failure in Philadelphia? to and why?

I can't think of any quite like it. The Rush Revere book series comes to mind because they also are a fun way to learn history.

Have you listened to any of Alexander Parrish’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I have not.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I liked that George Washington was so revered, even by the spy it seemed.

I really enjoyed that the author used the POV of a British indentured servant "spy" to bring the history to life.

Where does Dangerous Beauty rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Well, it may not rank at the top like a riveting novel, but definitely a great listen for anyone interested in wildlife.

What did you like best about this story?

The true stories of encounters with bears.

What does Eric Martin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The feel that you are really there experiencing it.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Don't forget there is real danger in getting up-close and personal with wildlife.

Any additional comments?

It would have been nice if there could have been at least 2 narrators to go back and forth between, just because all the stories were not by the same author.

There is no comparison, as this is not a novel, but a teaching book.

I have not listened to any other of their books before.

Any additional comments?

I loved this book. I started listening to it about 5 weeks before I left for a mission trip to Ecuador. I needed the practice of listening to Spanish being spoken and trying to decipher what is said. I was refreshed in the basics of Spanish and I learned so much. Much of it is still "over my head" but as I continue to listen and practice and learn, I will get better. The narrators are very encouraging as you go along. The Christian terms in Spanish helped me so much, especially during worship services in Quito.

Would you listen to The Fragrance of Surrender again? Why?

No. There are only a few books I would consider reading or listening to more than once.

The narrator's voice was pleasant to listen to, but a little slow in my opinion. Sometimes the narrator was "spot on" with the hispanic accent and other times, not so much.

I liked the story and plot. I felt that it was not quite believable that a boy at age 10 could do and say what he did. He acted more like a 12-13 year old, in my opinion.

I'm afraid that the non-Christian may not finish the book, as the presentation of the gospel came so early and often in the plot; If the non-believer gets turned off by that; he/she might stop reading.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked that the gospel was clearly explained, with repentance, salvation and forgiveness for anyone willing to follow Jesus.

I liked that the young boy Samuel's faith was key to many others coming to know Christ. That even a child can be used by God to bring others to Christ.

Which scene was your favorite?

When the Pastor risks his life to save Sammy in the storm, because I was afraid Sammy was dead.

Who was the most memorable character of The Fragrance of Surrender and why?

Samuel - he was amazing (maybe unbelievable so) in his articulation of the gospel even due to the fact that he had not been raised in a Christian home or church.

Any additional comments?

Keep up the good work!
