This is a great read. The historical points are well researched and approached from multiple sources to provide as clear a picture as possible about William Marshall's life. While no one can be perfect, Marshall was a prototype of chivalry, courage, and loyalty and his story is fascinating.

I wanted something a bit meatier than the usual tv shows are able to provide without really losing their audiences. This is slightly more than that but still with minimal mathematics. It provides many more thought exercises and attempts to visualize or at least make sense of the nonsensical world of modern physics and cosmology. I recommend this to the serious non-physicist nerds out there who have an appreciation for this sort of thing but haven't quite spent the time to get their heads wrapped around it (ok to the extent any layman can do that).

The Crusades audiobook cover art

A serious history of the first 3 crusades

This is a serious history of the first three crusades. It gives a very detailed look at the way things happened at that time. To its credit, this work does not attempt to judge the crusades by today's sentiments as so many casual observers of the crusades do. Still there are some comparisons with modern times but not in an attempt to pass judgment.

The listener may benefit from reading less detailed works about the crusades before wading into this book because s/he would at least be familiar with the major places and names and could then listen to this work to to fill in colorful details and minor events and personalities.

The book is very well written with very colorful descriptions and the narration is fantastic. The story of Shackleton's feat is well known and one for the ages.
