The characters and story were as lush and full of life as the marshlands of Barkley Cove. The narrator gave voice to those poignant words and brought the book to life as few others have. Amazing, beautiful, might relisten immediately!

I've listened to four novels by this author, with the same narrator. The writing is beautiful and well crafted, but the story and plot are somewhat formulaic across the four novels.

I was eager to get my fix of the amazing creature world Deborah Harkness created in the All Souls trilogy, and I was expecting a sweeping, epic struggle to do.... something. I was disappointed, though, because nothing really happened in this book. There was no real conflict, no challenge, no struggle, nothing to overcome, except for the mundane. My imagination raced at how the tale might start to emerge, maybe a vampiric virus that Marcus could cure but only by confronting his past. Or romantic conflict where he must exorcize his demons to move forward with Phoebe. No such luck.

Pity that such an amazing story teller forgot to tell a story.

The narration was overly gimmicky when voicing the three Mrs Ws. I can hardly understand what she was saying.
