Five-year-old Sloane McBride couldn’t sleep that night. Her parents were arguing again, their harsh words heating the cool autumn air. Then there was that other sound - the ominous thump before all went quiet. In the morning, her mother was gone. The official story was that she left. Her loving, devoted mother! That hadn’t sat any better at the time than it did when Sloane moved out at 18, anxious to leave her Texas hometown in search of anywhere else. But not even a fresh start working as a model in New York could keep the nightmares at bay. Or her fears that her father is deadly.

What is the nature of space and time? How do we fit within the universe? How does the universe fit within us? There's no better guide through these mind-expanding questions than acclaimed astrophysicist and best-selling author Neil deGrasse Tyson. But today, few of us have time to contemplate the cosmos. So Tyson brings the universe down to Earth succinctly and clearly, with sparkling wit, in digestible chapters consumable anytime and anywhere in your busy day.

Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space. Among these problem solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation.

Where does A People's History of the United States rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I love this book. I think listening to it makes it better- I tend to glaze over trying to read text books (School lies trauma I think...) I love that this goes into more depth and includes more than just the rich white man's tall tales!

What other book might you compare A People's History of the United States to and why?

A Short History of Nearly Everything

Which scene was your favorite?

The woman being prosecuted for giving birth outside of marriage speaking up about the absurdity of her charges!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No- this needs to be taken piece by piece to fully get it. I plan on listening twice and taking notes next time.

Any additional comments?

This needs to be read/listened to by most of us. It may be too graphic for younger children (If you ignore that they already see far worse on TV or playing video games.) But knowing that it is true...
