The Marriage Lie audiobook cover art

What disappointed you about The Marriage Lie?

This narrator seems to think all men talk as though they have been stoned nonstop for days. She is also inconsistent with the accent for the main character. The main character is an absolute moron who continues to pine for her "very favorite person on the planet" until I was so sick of that phrase I could scream. Not a great selection.

How could the performance have been better?

A different narrator.

I could not listen to more than 30 minutes of this before I had to turn it off. The author narrated, and unfortunately sounds bored with his own work. The performance is absolutely dreadful. He must be a smoker because I could even hear his raspy breathing between sentences. This makes me really appreciate the professionals whose great narrative skill bring a story to life. Sadly, this was a waste of a good credit.

I enjoyed the story but did not like the narrator's reading of the story. He sounded the same all the way through-whether he was talking about being beaten up, his lover, his long-lost brother, or the fruit basket brought over by a neighbor. I almost gave up. I think this narrator might have done better reading the few chapters in the book written in 3rd person, and a younger, more enthusiastic reader should have read the parts in 1st person. I will check the next book I download, and will not download one by this narrator.

I find the narrator extremely irritating. She reads this novel of sex and murder the way one would read a child's novel-enunciating every word so clearly and sing-songy that the narration and concepts are incongruous.
