Hours of trying to figure out the weird interlocking stories in this book only to have it end with “to be continued in book 2.” So not worth the credit.

Narrator is badly mismatched. Sweet southern grandma narrating the voice of a college coed. It just doesn't work and distracts from the story.

The mystery story is fun and works better than the romance. The romance is predictable but still enjoyable. Can't really understand why the female protagonist is so uncommunicative if she is supposed to be in love. She turns away from her love interest without any rhyme or reason to create the rift to be repaired as a happy ending. Seems forced. Narrator Kate Rudd is first rate.

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her "our little genius". Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn't know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.

The book is typical Nora Roberts - diverting, light romance with minimal character development. However the narration was terrible and so monotone it made even the sex scenes boring. Read the paper version instead.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.
