Like every other hobbit, Bilbo Baggins likes nothing better than a quiet evening in his snug hole in the ground, dining on a sumptuous dinner in front of a fire. But when a wandering wizard captivates him with tales of the unknown, Bilbo becomes restless. Soon he joins the wizard’s band of homeless dwarves in search of giant spiders, savage wolves, and other dangers. Bilbo quickly tires of the quest for adventure and longs for the security of his familiar home. But before he can return to his life of comfort, he must face the greatest threat of all.

Wonderful story. Wonderfully done. We are ready for the Fellowship of the Ring. We've read the Ring cycle before but not the Hobbit. Now we are excited to listen to the others for a different experience.

We want to get the books from the library to read. It will be interesting to check spellings of the Welsh words and see the names of the characters. Susan Cooper has a wonderful imagination, but also she has got a grasp on Welsh language and culture, and even more, a good point of view about what is important to mankind.

McCullough's John Adams has the sweep and vitality of a great novel. This is history on a grand scale, an audiobook about politics, war, and social issues, but also about human nature, love, religious faith, virtue, ambition, friendship, and betrayal, and the far-reaching consequences of noble ideas. Above all, it is an enthralling, often surprising story of one of the most important and fascinating Americans who ever lived.

Where does John Adams rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

My first audiobook, so naturally the best.

What other book might you compare John Adams to and why?

I've read another book by McCullough. Both great books.

What does Nelson Runger bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He reads as if just telling me the story. Very easy to understand.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but that's impossible. It's very, very long.
