The Scarlet Virgins is a memoir of one woman's journey through the Christian Purity Movement. It wrestles with the experiences and temptations of her and her peers, including the temptation of apostasy, addiction, alcoholism, anorexia, depression, self-harm, and suicide. The author seeks to restore the truth to broken souls: It is Christ who makes us pure.

This starts off sounding like it's going to be one long extreme-right indictment of the sexual revolution, but please hang with it. It does turn around after several chapters. It is still told from a very traditional Christian viewpoint, but it does a good job of illustrating the unhealthier parts of certain sects' beliefs and explaining all the ways those beliefs can backfire and cause harm. I disagree with a lot of what was said regarding modern views on sexuality, but I also think it's important to hear the "other side" out and understand their viewpoints. My only complaint is that the description would lead one to believe that the story revolves around the sexual assault and the community's horrible reaction to it, but it doesn't. That event is really just touched on about halfway through the book and not really fully explored before the book moves on to other things. Do not expect this to be a secular look at certain Christians' attitudes on sexuality; rather it is one woman's description of her spiritual journey and how her upbringing had lasting effects on how she and her friends lived their lives. It really feels as if it's written by a Christian for other Christians.

Sonya and Callie discover it’s not just the men who verbally assaulted them on the street who’ve lost their minds; men everywhere have gone insane. And they believe they’ve found the origin of the mayhem. A radio in the kitchen is playing a hate-filled message against women, and it’s being delivered by the president. There’s only one way to stop the men from attacking women, and logic tells them they need to terminate the chaos at its source.

Ok. The book is well written, but be warned, it's very graphic and does not pull any punches. I had to stop listening in several places and pick it back up when I'd recovered. Also, the language is VERY adult, so be sure there's no little ones around to hear "C U Next Tuesday" being thrown out there with a fair amount of frequency.

I found this book to be very thought-provoking. I don't want to say too much, as the book is short and it would be easy to give too much of it away, but there is a lot of information given in that short period of time. Leigh Adams did his usual great job as the narrator, being very clear and easy to listen to. I would absolutely be willing to listen to more books to which his name is attached.

I can see how it would be useful for someone who has had to deal with someone like this in their life. I'm not really sure what to make of this one. It's well written and the narration is clear, but the way it's read is very measured, almost like how you'd read a poem. Not sure if it was meant to be read that way or not, but it certainly added a unique dimension to the story.

She’s the best baker in Bellmare, Massachusetts, and just wants to continue to lead a quiet life in the quaint and haunted tourist destination. Not even an elaborate, last-minute wedding cake commission - a multi-tiered fondant replica of Dracula’s castle - could be a stake in her side. But when the bride turns up dead hours before the wedding, Priscilla and her pastries are the first to be suspected. Priscilla will have to get to the bottom of this murder, or her business and reputation will be six feet under.

Private Michael Kolcek used to be a sergeant. But honestly, he never cared a whole lot about that sort of thing. His time as a linguist in the army is almost up, so he spends most of his days left in Germany trying to pick up frauleins at the pub. But the army has other plans for him, as it often does. The cannibal plague had spread to Russia. While there was no love lost between United States Army and the godless Communists, it was fairly close to its NATO allies. So the army put a team of specialists together to go into Russia, and see what the fuss was all about. Turns out they needed a linguist, too. Kolcek was in for the duration.
