Beneath the towering bleached ribs of a dead, ancient beast lies New Crobuzon, a squalid city where humans, Re-mades, and arcane races live in perpetual fear of Parliament and its brutal militia. The air and rivers are thick with factory pollutants and the strange effluents of alchemy, and the ghettos contain a vast mix of workers, artists, spies, junkies, and whores.

Maybe I just missed Marsters but I do have one issue. Why did Mouse have that accent? He grew up in Chicago. It also felt a little insensitively stereotypical.

This is not my favorite of this series but I really like it. I do wish that there hadn't been scenes in the book where one or the other of them said "no not right now" and the reaction was basically "deal with it". It's a normal romance novel thing that I don't particularly like. Aside from that and the weird moment where Deacon is infantile about periods I loved it.

How familiar are you with the world's second-largest and fastest-growing religion? In these 12 lectures, Professor Esposito guides you through the facts and myths surrounding Islam and its more than 1.2 billion adherents. Many in the West know little about the faith and are familiar only with the actions of a minority of radical extremists, but this lecture series will help you better understand Islam's role as both a religion and a way of life, and its deep impact on world affairs both historically and today.

It's hard to give peace a chance when the other side regards conquest as the only option and a sneak attack as the best means to that end. That's why the Kingdom of Manticore needs allies against the Republic of Haven, and the planet Grayson is strategically situated to make a very good ally indeed. But Her Majesty’s Foreign Office overlooked a “minor cultural difference” when they chose Honor Harrington to carry the flag: women on the planet of Grayson are without rank or rights and Honor’s mere presence is an intolerable affront to every male on the planet.

There are a couple specific things about the reader I don't like. First, she's not so much monotone, but stilted throughout. Second, she seems to pick random accent amalgams for every other character and it's just distracting. It's usually somewhere between Russian stereotype and French stereotype.

The story though is solid. My only complaint there is that, while I do like politics in my sci fi, the board room scenes drag on and on...

This seems like a classic "bodice ripper", except it's not. It isn't written well, the plot is mostly missing, the characters are annoying, flat, and predictable. I tolerate these qualities in "trashy romance novels" but it didn't really have all the romance novel aspects either.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.
