Lydia is dead. But they don't know this yet.… So begins the story in this exquisite debut novel about a Chinese American family living in a small town in 1970s Ohio. Lydia is the favorite child of Marilyn and James Lee; their middle daughter, a girl who inherited her mother's bright blue eyes and her father's jet-black hair. I read this book as a book club selection, and I was determined to read before our meeting. I didn't get to finish, but even after the meeting, I finished it anyway. It was compelling enough. Most people in the book club, including myself, seem to think it was worthy of lengthy discussion, that it was thought-provoking and very entertaining, and there was a lot of meat for a book club to chew on. I would recommend it.

In a world where nothing supernatural exists, Tess Eckhart is positive she's going crazy. After her complete freak-out at a high school party, her family is too. So much that they pack their bags and move across the country, next to a nationally-renowned facility for the mentally ill. Tess is determined to fit in at her new school, despite the whispers and stares. But when it comes to Luka Williams, a reluctantly popular boy in her class, she's unused to a stare that intense.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

If you could sum up Unspeakable in three words, what would they be?
Good plot - pretty satisfying.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Talmadge Ragan?
Someone who didn't ENUNCIATE her words so much. It was so distracting and irritating. She is also incredibly nasal and doesn't differentiate much between characters. Sometimes, characters have and lose an accent from one chapter to the next.
