Things are not well within the Lodrak Empire. An entire city goes up in smoke and ash, and an entire province is slowly being consumed by an ever-expanding cloud of death. But while the humans rally to contain the fallout of this disaster, they are much quicker to pin the blame for it on their elven neighbors to the north. With centuries' worth of strife and bad blood between the two nations flaring up, all out war is rapidly becoming an inevitability.

Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well. Then one night Minalan is forced to pick up his mageblade again to defend his adopted home from the vanguard of an army of goblins bent on a genocidal crusade against all mankind. And that was the good news.

I was a bit put off by the narration at first, as it seemed a little bit "careful" for lack of a better word. However, due to the nature of the story, it actually works very well once you get used to it. The story itself is easy to get into, easy to understand (if you're familiar with online games), and flows well. It also stands alone quite well, and the author could have ended here. I'm interested to see where he takes it from here, and only hope he doesn't ruin it by taking it too far. We'll see.

In a distant future, no remnants of human beings remain, but their successors thrive throughout the galaxy. These are the offspring of humanity's genius-animals uplifted into walking, talking, sentient beings. The Fant are one such species: anthropomorphic elephants ostracized by other races and long ago exiled to the rainy ghetto world of Barsk. There, they develop medicines upon which all species now depend.

Sixty-five million years ago, a disastrous cataclysm eliminated three quarters of all life on Earth. Overnight, the age of dinosaurs ended. The age of mammals had begun. But what if history had happened differently? What if the reptiles had survived to evolve into intelligent life? In West of Eden, best-selling author Harry Harrison has created a rich, dramatic saga of a world where the descendants of the dinosaurs struggled with a clan of humans in a battle for survival.

In the 20th century Earth sent probes, transmissions, and welcoming messages to the stars. Unfortunately, someone noticed. The Galactics arrived with their battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined their vast Empire. Swearing allegiance to our distant alien overlords wasn't the only requirement for survival. We also had to have something of value to trade, something that neighboring planets would pay their hard-earned credits to buy. As most of the local worlds were too civilized to have a proper army, the only valuable service Earth could provide came in the form of soldiers....

Once more, suspend your disbelief and some of your physics knowledge, and you can enjoy this story. And most of the physics is spot-on (and some is under debate, so who knows?)

The story is a long one, but you'll hardly notice because it's well-told, thought-provoking, entertaining, and well-narrated. It's also COMPLETE, for which I'm grateful. We're not left with any dangling threads. Yay!

And as a side-bonus, if your physics-bone is tickled by some of the concepts in here, you may actually learn some actual science too! But check the facts before you take it as gospel, cos it's not 100% (it's a story, duh!)
