On a damp October night, beautiful young Ashley Cordova is found dead in an abandoned warehouse in lower Manhattan. Though her death is ruled a suicide, veteran investigative journalist Scott McGrath suspects otherwise. As he probes the strange circumstances surrounding Ashley’s life and death, McGrath comes face-to-face with the legacy of her father: the legendary, reclusive, cult-horror-film director Stanislas Cordova - a man who hasn’t been seen in public for more than 30 years.

I saw this was a book a lot of people were reading for a while now and I started the audio book not knowing what to expect.

WOW.

This was phenomenal. I spent every moment I could trying to finish the book. The way the book is weaved with characters and films is really great. There's one chapter that I could have done without -- towards the end -- but overall, I was thoroughly sad when this was over. 9/10!

For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

I think the narrator did a really great job with the story. I REALLY enjoyed this story more than Inferno. The only negative that I would say is that NO MATTER WHAT the grand reveal was, for it to come at the very end of the book was a build up that took too long. Trust me, Brown made it suspenseful... but I wish there was just a clue. I strongly suggest this one.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This material was just so mind numbing for me. Absolute nonsense droning on and on for hours. I feel like there was nothing to learn And I LOVE The Great Courses. I LOVE the history of the Papacy. This didn't do it for me.

What could The Great Courses have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I think more approachable material. The information was just not interesting at all. And again, I'm fascinated by the history of the Papacy and the Vatican.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Professor Thomas F. X. Noble?

Well... I definitely wouldn't have cast Professor Noble. While I do not mean this in any way personal (after all, these comments are about a living, breathing human being with feelings), I felt his narration was not good at all. He started most sentences with a VERY high pitch and then closed most of his sentences in a mumble or eating the words. So if you are to turn the volume up to hear him better, the high pitch becomes a screech. It just wasn't an enjoyable experience for me. I'm SO SORRY Professor Noble!

In The Lightkeepers, we follow Miranda, a nature photographer who travels to the Farallon Islands, an exotic and dangerous archipelago off the coast of California, for a one-year residency capturing the landscape. Her only companions are the scientists studying there, odd and quirky refugees from the mainland living in rustic conditions; they document the fish populations around the island, the bold trio of sharks called the Sisters that hunt the surrounding waters, and the overwhelming bird population....

Would you try another book from Abby Geni and/or Xe Sands?

I REALLY hate to review a book based on the narrator... and I hate to review a narrator because I know she's an actual person... but the ends of the sentences were literally lost. inaudible. When you try to turn up the volume to hear it, the start of the next sentence is so loud. It's seriously impossible. I love her voice... but words are completely lost.

How could the performance have been better?

Clearer diction from start of sentence to end of sentence. Trailing off is not a good effect. I'm sorry, Xe! I hope you're not reading this!

If you could sum up The Doomsday Conspiracy in three words, what would they be?

Thrilling, fast-paced, exciting

What didn’t you like about David Dukes’s performance?

This says it is narrated by "David Duke" but the narrator is a female and not David Duke. The narrator of this book (not Duke) was so monotone throughout the novel. She could have given such a great performance with the material but it just failed. Even when there were multiple voices within dialogue it was just so bland. It's a shame.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It's throughly entertaining but, I hate to say it on an audiobook site, but read the book instead of listening to this narration.
