The ruling Asharites of Al-Rassan have come from the desert sands, but over centuries, seduced by the sensuous pleasures of their new land, their stern piety has eroded. The Asharite empire has splintered into decadent city-states led by warring petty kings. King Almalik of Cartada is on the ascendancy, aided always by his friend and advisor, the notorious Ammar ibn Khairan - poet, diplomat, soldier - until a summer afternoon of savage brutality changes their relationship forever.

I cannot believe I have lived my reading life thus far without experiencing Kay's work. This book is breathtaking, not only in its complexity, but in its literary aesthetic. The number of times I found myself zoning out and staring off in wonder at nothingness as I listened to the descriptions...

Read this. You will not be disappointed. Even the narrator could not have been chosen more appropriately. what a conglomeration of talent.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

33% Harry Potter, 33% Hunger Games, 33% Game of Thrones... and 100% original. Without a doubt the best book I've experienced in years, probably since the Harry Potter series itself.
