After his surgery, Marco has a long road of rehabilitation ahead of him, but his precinct needs him to focus on the murder of a young serviceman who might have intimate ties to the mayor. Peyton wants to be there for him; however, when a DEA agent turns up missing, the Ghost Squad is called to the Yucatan to investigate. What they find there will embroil them in a drug war between two countries, where illicit activities are being bartered underground and the players are impossible to identify.

I was very surprised when I read a story in the news about drug gangs in Cancun hotels, a few days after listening to this audiobook. I like that the author is including real world problems in her plots and that just makes it more interesting.
As usual, the performance was excellent. Her portrayal of all the different characters is always consistent and it feels like reconnecting with old friends.
Peyton's cases are getting difficult and violent, but I like that she's still moved and affected. She hasn't become used to it or hardened by all those bad things she encounters. I enjoyed this a lot.

Navigating their personal relationship has proven more challenging, however. Marco’s jealousy over Peyton’s newest friend, Mike, causes friction between them, but although he tries to curb it, he can’t deny a growing feeling that something isn’t right with this man.

Would you listen to Vampires in Hollywood again? Why?

Yes. I really enjoyed the gang going to L.A. It's funny to see what they think about the whole Hollywood scene and how they immerse themselves in that environment to solve the case.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, as with all of Peyton's adventures. It's hard to press pause.
I am very intrigued by the storyline of Peyton and Mike. I am very curious about what will happen there.

Any additional comments?

This is one of the darker mysteries in the series, I think, but that's what makes it interesting. I love the parallel storytelling and the narrator makes it easy to follow both timelines. I found the story compelling and cinematographic. Sadly, I don't think it's farfetched at all. Once again the Hamilton-Hazen combination is a winner. I'm always anxious for the next installment of this wonderful series.

What made the experience of listening to The Peyton Brooks' Mysteries Box Set the most enjoyable?

I love that I can keep on listening, like when you binge-watch a show you love on Netflix. I enjoy how the characters mature and get more and more defined, as you listen to the whole set of stories. What a wonderful idea to bundle them up in a box set.

Which character – as performed by Kelley Hazen Storyteller Productions – was your favorite?

I love Abe. He's always been a favorite of mine. His humor and his personality are very well portrayed. So much so, that I have a mental image of what he looks like and can identify him even before the narration says it's him that's talking.

Any additional comments?

I like this series a lot for many reasons. I enjoy the story, the characters, their interactions, and of course, the narration. You can tell that the narrator is loyal to each of the characters and it makes it more fun for me as a listener. I really enjoy her performance, and sometimes she makes me laugh out loud. I love this series and I'm always hoping the next chapter on Peyton's life isn't far behind. Keep them coming!

Peyton and Marco have solved more cases than many senior members of the San Francisco PD, but this case (the death of a high end real estate agent) is proving more difficult than the others. With no evidence, no suspects, and no motive, Peyton fears they won't get a break in the case before the killer strikes again. In the multi-million dollar San Francisco real estate market, realtors are literally dying for a sale.

Would you consider the audio edition of Murder in the Presidio to be better than the print version?

I love the audio version because it creates a special atmosphere for the whole story that I would miss in the print version. I have an image in my head for each character because of the narrator's performance. I'm dying to know what happens next, but I won't read the following book, I'd much rather listen to it.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. There are many interesting story lines in this book. Most of all I have my own theories about the bad guy and I love how the characters' personal lives get more and more complex.

Have you listened to any of Kelley Hazen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. I love how she narrates all of Peyton Brooks mysteries. She has great timing for all the dialogue and is an excellent performer. It's not just about reading clearly and with a good voice, you have to engage the listener and she definitely does that.

Any additional comments?

Get the audio version of this series and I guarantee that the experience will be completely different and more exciting. Can't wait for the next book!

Evelyn Harbinger sees nothing wrong with a one-night stand. At 149 years old, Eve may look like she bakes oatmeal cookies in the afternoon and dozes in her rocking chair in the evening, but once the gray hair and wrinkles are traded for jet-black tresses and porcelain skin, she can still turn heads as the beautiful girl she once was. Can't fault a girl for having a little fun, can you?

Would you listen to Petty Magic again? Why?

I think so. The story covers different eras and it would be interesting to listen for more details now that I know where the story ends and I'm not worried about what will happen.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Petty Magic?

I don't want to say too much and spoil the fun for someone who hasn't listened to it, so I will just say the scene in the cemetery was my favorite. The whole atmosphere was perfectly captured by the narrator's performance.

What about Kelley Hazen’s performance did you like?

Everything. I enjoy how she defines the characters so clearly. She also narrates with emotion and depth, and that draws you into the story.

Any additional comments?

I'm not one for stories about witches or fantasy, but I enjoyed this story very much. I found it inventive and creative and the narrator truly keeps you engaged. It's not just an empty silly story about witches, it's about family and women and their loves and losses.

The rest are all Americans of various ages from 22 to 92 and can have any Houston "twang".
