i started reading this book over a decade ago. I never finished it.

I saw it on audible and decided to give it a listen. After all of these i want to say I missed out on a great book. Happy that I gave it a chance and finally finished it.

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

I am a sci-fi fan, I don't normally listen to audio-books that fall outside of the realm of space or future technologies, but every so often I like to change things up for a listen or two. I wish I could give more than five stars. I enjoyed this title greatly. I had thought that this was going to be some feel-good story where some youth solved the world's problems, before she goes off to college. I was mistaken. I sat down ready to listen to the book, and not expecting much, and was met with a story that not only had my interest, but had me emotionally invested. There were times where I, a strapping young man and veteran of 27 years old, had to stop listening to collect my emotions. The issues that these characters deal with became personal to me and hit home for me in a way that hearing these types of things on the news never has, or maybe I grew numb to them based on the context. This book made me look at myself and my personal and professional relationships, as they relate to race and social justice. Please give this book a listen and be open to its message.

Quentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A senior in high school, he's still secretly preoccupied with a series of fantasy novels he read as a child, set in a magical land called Fillory. Imagine his surprise when he finds himself unexpectedly admitted to a very secret, very exclusive college of magic in upstate New York, where he receives a thorough and rigorous education in the craft of modern sorcery.

A great end to a captive saga. The only thing I wish is that it were longer I almost feel like the end was rushed. All of the strings were rushed to be tied. A great listen nonetheless.

I wanted some good Science Fiction to listen to on my commutes to and from school on the subways here in New York. A good way to space out, pardon the wordplay. I was browsing through Audible and found the first book, "Fear the Skies", and I was really drug into the book. it amazing. I found myself listening to it all the time, even while at home and cleaning, while in the stores, or between classes. Needless to say I burned through the first book with vigor and was disappointed not to find the second book waiting for me.
The other day, Jan 19 to be exact, I was browsing through Audible to find a book to spend some of my credits on and decided to check for a second book which I had Googled a while back, and knew was coming. I was happy to see it was available for pre-order, and the release was the next day. It was a great coincidence.
This book will not disappoint as a successor to the first and I have already pre-ordered the third book. Without giving away any of the plot, the characters continue to develop and grow, and the story moves well, it does a great job of satisfying the plot lines started in the first book, while holding its own, as well as starting new ones for the third. I burned through this in 3 days, thanks to the snow storm here in the Northeast. I have to say this series is turning out to be one of my all-time favorites. I highly recommend, and will continue to support.
