El Paso wasn’t the Promised Land that Ian and his crew had hoped for, but it wasn’t a total bust either. The concept of a safe haven in today’s world was a fool’s errand at best. This was the consensus of their tiny band and to keep moving their only salvation. While others waited in their pens, the four from the private security company moved on, taking on as many they could help, in hopes that they too would join the fight. Their journey was long and arduous, but it was worth it...they hope.

I returned to the city with one thing on my mind; find my nemesis and finish her. Nothing else mattered. Not the shadowy Organization I worked for. Not the Magic Council and their veiled threats. None of it. Just me and the witch locked into one final dance. But things weren’t exactly going to plan as I discovered a new, sinister threat. One that was trying to pry at the kind of locked doors that should never be opened, as well as driving a conspiracy to turn the entire world on its head.

I admit it did take me a little bit to get into the story. I'm glad I stuck with it. I know it's a good story when my kids (11, 13, and 15) are willing to listen to the story on their own. The queen's brother is creepy. The narrator really added to the story. I really liked his performance. I hope he will continue to the narration in the future books. Six weeks since discovering the truth behind his family legacy, Sam Harlan has worked with Sister Callie Calahane to learn how to kill vampires, desperate to make them pay. The woman's voice on the answering machine was intriguing. “Jack, it's Mary Kate. I've got your newest order and.... I need to talk.” Jack Harlan, the legendary vampire killer, was Sam's distant relative, but Jack Harlan was dead. Sam had seen to it himself.

Pretty good story. I haven't listened to all the Dane and Bones books so I was surprised to find out that Dane and Angel are "on hiatus". I have to admit I'm a Dane and Angel fan so I was a bit peeved. Other than that, I enjoyed the story and liked Dane and Bones got into and out of trouble. Some of the banter between Dane and Bones can get a little tiresome but not it didn't detract from the story. I enjoyed Mr. Kafer's performance. The dust had barely settled after my skirmish at Galloway Asylum, and there I was looking forward to some downtime, maybe even a promotion. What I got instead was a covert assignment and an urgent warning from on high: Get out of the city. So I did. And after a quick, or should I say bad, trip down the wrong side of memory lane, I found myself holing up in a sleepy rural town on a strictly cloak and dagger mission: Copperwood Falls, a haunted town where the woods whisper at night, and demons come calling. A place where the shadows are restless, and almost nothing is as it seems.
