First published in 1970, nine years after Hemingway's death, this is the story of an artist and adventurer, a man much like Hemingway himself. Beginning in the 1930s, Islands in the Stream follows the fortunes of Thomas Hudson, from his experiences as a painter on the Gulf Stream island of Bimini through his antisubmarine activities off the coast of Cuba during World War II. Hemingway is at his mature best in this beguiling tale.

Not all "celebrities" are able to handle classic literature, but veteran cinema journeyman Bruce Greenwood gives perhaps the best audiobook reading of any American actor I've ever heard -- and I've heard more books than anyone has a right to. "Islands in the Stream" is a flawed classic by the consummate novelist. It's vintage Hemingway, but occasionally becomes TOO Hemingway, if that makes sense. Too clipped, too spare, too laden with arm-tiring exertion, leaf-strewn nature writing and ocean-weathered compound adjectives. But don't let that deter you; Greenwood's performance is not to be missed!

Since time immemorial, humans have worshipped the gods they call Fhrey, truly a race apart: invincible in battle, masters of magic, and seemingly immortal. But when a god falls to a human blade, the balance of power between humans and those they thought were gods changes forever. Now only a few stand between humankind and annihilation: Raithe, reluctant to embrace his destiny as the God Killer. Suri, a young seer burdened by signs of impending doom. And Persephone, who must overcome personal tragedy to lead her people.

One wouldn't expect a novel based on a video game to be both moving and riveting, but this book achieved both. Excellent story, excellent narration. I didn’t play the game, so that definitely isn't a prerequisite. Well worth the credit.

What content there is never ceases to entertain, but the abridgement felt skimpy and haphazard. Pegg doesn't disappoint in writing or performance, but his publishers/editors (or whoever made the cuts) did him a disservice.

I've read dozens upon dozens of books from the galaxy far, away, and this is far and away the most rewarding. It's certainly not without flaws and doesn't rank with the great literary triumphs from Timothy Zahn and James Luceno, but it has heart and spirit that even those authors can't quite deliver. Jeff Gurner more than holds his own, with both narration and character voicing of the first order. Both volumes abound in laughs, tears and goosebumps -- don't miss this one!!!
