There is a darkness hinted at the edges of the story that makes the lead compelling. Rather than being a blatantly dark murderer, the assassin comes across almost relatable. Almost, hut not so much as to be too cheesy or cheap. I look forward to continuing the series.

When a joint FBI-Seattle Police investigation of an international child pornography ring gets too close to certain powerful people, sex-crimes detective Livia Lone becomes the target of a hit that barely goes awry - a hit that had been offered to John Rain, a retired specialist in “natural causes.” Suspecting the FBI itself was behind the attack, Livia reaches out to former Marine sniper Dox. Together, they assemble an ad hoc group to identify and neutralize the threat. There’s Rain. Rain’s estranged lover, Mossad agent and honeytrap specialist Delilah.

Anomaly examines the prospect of an alien intelligence discovering life on Earth. The technological gulf between humanity and the alien species is measured in terms of millions of years. The only way to communicate is using science, but not everyone is so patient. Humanity's first contact with an alien intelligence is far more radical than anyone has ever dared imagine. With a technological gap of millions of years, mankind is barely able to recognize the arrival of an alien space craft outside the gates of the United Nations in New York.

The package is addressed to her father - an expert in Viking culture - and inside is a ninth-century sword, a chilling thank-you note, and photos of two dead bodies in a tableau evoking a Nordic funeral. It is hard to be original but this work feels fresh. The layered approach to life and after life as well as the corruption that comes with power is old woven new. I admittedly struggled with the introduction and was tempted to put it down. It just didn't speak to me initially. Once I pushed through and got to the heart of the story, however, I learned to appreciate the opening.

I love the foundation of this story. The concept of the 'bad guy' is one I've chewed on before and it is executed well. The angst in the love story and the sisters gets trying at times as it distracted from the books story. I realize it is core to the series, so it doesn't ruin an otherwise solid book.
