I was born into British aristocracy, but I've made my fortune in Manhattan. New York is now my kingdom. Back in Britain, my family is fighting over who's the next Duke of Fairfax. The rules say it's me - if I'm married. It's not a trade-off worth making. I could never limit myself to just one woman. Or so I thought until my world is turned upside down. Now, the only way I can save the empire I built is to inherit the title I've never wanted - so I need a wife. To take my mind off business I need a night that's all pleasure.

At once wildly original and stuffed with irresistible nostalgia, Ready Player One is a spectacularly genre-busting, ambitious, and charming debut—part quest novel, part love story, and part virtual space opera set in a universe where spell-slinging mages battle giant Japanese robots, entire planets are inspired by Blade Runner, and flying DeLoreans achieve light speed.

Loved, loved, loved this book and couldn't put it down. It has so much complexity while still being a really fun listen. I listened to it for 2 days straight as I was doing yard work. My husband would try to talk to me every once in a while and I was grumpy that he was interrupting the story. I can't stop thinking about it and have recommended it to everyone who will listen to me.

I think this book describes an important part of our history and I really wanted to like this book, but I just didn't. I slogged through the first 1/3 or so but didn't finish. This is the only time in my life that I've ever thought the movie will be better than the book. I think what turned me off in the book is all the detail and movies aren't able to go into that much detail but instead usually focus on the main points.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

If you could sum up The Martian in three words, what would they be?

I listened to this book a couple of months ago and I'm still thinking about it. I loved the descriptions of how he figured out all the science to keep himself alive - this doesn't come through in the movie as well. I've been recommending this to friends and say "I don't remember why I bought this one since it's not something I'd normally buy but it was amazing, you have to read it." I started watching the movie while I was still listening to the book because I was so excited about the story. I watched over a few days so finished the book before I finished the movie. As is almost always the case, the book was much better than the movie (but the movie was good too). I couldn't stop listening.

What disappointed you about Lingus?

I loved Kulti (listened to it 4 times straight!) and I read another comment that said this was a fresher, updated version. I completely disagree. I didn't think the story was as well-developed, there wasn't as much of a reason why the two main characters liked each other. It just seemed like "oh, he's cute, I'm in love with him". One of the reasons I loved Kulti was that Sal seemed like a well-rounded character - she was feisty, had a great circle of friends and family, and was very focused on doing what it takes to be an excellent soccer player. In Lingus, it was like all the characters were just hanging out not doing much, making fart jokes. I couldn't relate and wasn't inspired at all. And I couldn't get past the main male character and other characters being porn stars. It just left a bad taste in my mouth for several days afterwards. I'm baffled about why I listened to the whole thing - I guess I liked Kulti so much that I couldn't believe I didn't like this one so much. Ugh. I'm going to listen to Kulti again...

What did you like best about Nefertiti? What did you like least?

I like historical fiction in general and learned a bit about this time period. I didn't know anything about Nefertiti before. I didn't think Nefertiti was a very sympathetic character though. She was just plain mean to her sister yet her sister was very devoted to her.

Was Nefertiti worth the listening time?

Yes

Any additional comments?

I bought this book because I read Madame Tussaud, thought it was excellent, and wanted more from this writer. I liked it fine but Madame Tussaud was better. I will listen to her other novels.
