Thirty-four years ago, on October 31, poor Hannah Talbott took part in a scavenger hunt gone violently wrong. The mean girls made sure of it. To this day, for a haunted local mother, the most unsettling Halloween costume of all is an urban legend they call Hannah-Beast. It’s a reminder of the past she can’t forget. Especially tonight when it’s come back, so close to home.

Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered. Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls. Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design.

Totally good book. I'm a horror mystery fan but truly enjoyed this change up. It was nice and makes you "have faith" in whatever belief system you have. I love Samuel and Mickey. It makes you wish they were your friends. The odd ones that you just know will change the world. Truly loved it. Bravo

This was better than I expected. Though I figured out by midway what was what., it still through me for a loop and I couldn't stop listening. A definite good "read /listen" to get things done in the office. I'm a hard sale on books that are not Stephen King, Dean Koontz, J.A. Konrath, or Patrick Logan so to get me to write a review, excellent job! I'll be listening to other books from this author.

FYI this is a suspense type mystery. Good intrigue. No gore or horror or overly romantic. I'm not a romance novel type woman. I prefer real world! Just enough to keep your a attention and turn the page.

This was TOTALLY not what I expected. I felt like I was ripped off, but honestly it was an OK story. I finished it because it has a slight thriller twist in the end. I would have preferred to have it in kindle unlimited as a free listen /read, but it's a good love story. I'm a true horror fanatic so for me to say this book was OK, is A BIG STRETCH. I liked the dual narrators from both main characters perspectives, Moses more so than Georgia. Just wish more suspense and the paranormal was involved instead of emotional scenes.

It was my second Bentley Little book and the verdict is still out on if I like his work or not. It's definitely not as gory as others have reviewed it, but has its parts ( incest) which are bad. It's not spooky enough for my liking (true Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Joe Hill fan) but I'll keep trying. I just enough avoid book with a purpose and this was all out weird... Kinda of what if Sam Walton was a vampire psycho and tried to take over the world through Walmart. I kept asking myself, why the hell are they just putting up with that and not leaving.

So I forced myself to finish listening to this. I'm not a suspense wrapped in romance person, so this was a struggle. Story was ok, a lot of hanging pieces. Couldn't tell if it's was present day or past at times; this could be totally the narrator voice. It was sensual but one tone for all characters, thus the confusion of who was talking. Don't think I'll stick with this author or series.
