FBI Special Agent Cate Wilde is back home on a remote Pacific Northwest island when she gets the call: a teenager’s skeletal remains have been found on a nearby island. Together with Tessa Black, a childhood friend turned local deputy, Cate confronts dreary weather and bleak leads to make sense of the death. The complications pile up as Cate is distracted by the coroner on the case - and by nagging memories that draw her two decades into the past. The remains suggest eerie similarities between this victim, and Cate and Tessa’s friend Samantha, who disappeared when she was fourteen.

This booklet sums up everything I don't like about novellas. The start was great: wounded FBI female lead, a doctor with his own demons (although he was a bit vanilla), murder mysteries of two teen girls 20 years apart, a broken famous author mourning the loss of his daughter and his slimy nephew, and a ghost. What's not to love? And then all of a sudden, I realize I am on chapter 11 of 12 and I feel like it's just getting started. Ugh! The killer came pretty much out of the blue, so the reader can't even begin to guess "who done it" and then it's over. I am kicking myself for not checking page count. This is a four-part series with the last two not out until October. I am not even going to start on the next one. The last two are on my wish list and I will see how I feel about finishing the series in about six months. Now I am off to try to find something I can sink my teeth into.

For Mercy Kilpatrick, returning to rural Oregon has meant coming to terms with her roots. Raised as a prepper, Mercy is now relying on her survivalist instincts to defend her town from the people the law can’t reach. But this time, an investigation calling up a dark past for her and police chief Truman Daly may be hitting too close to home. A rainstorm has uncovered the remains of five people - a reprise of the distinctive slaughter of two families twenty years ago. Except the convicted killer is in prison. Is this the case of a sick copycat, or is the wrong man behind bars?

Gritty, strong and determined like its central characters. The depiction of preppers and sovereign citizens continues to be interesting to me because it's so foreign. And I really like the maturing of the relationship between Mercy and Truman. I am always wary of connecting mental illness with acts of violence and an explanation for murder but remind myself that this is a work of fiction so I can suspend reality and still really enjoy the story.
