As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children, unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours.

Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a 12-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddox find themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery.

I listen to a lot of audible books while knitting. This one held my interest - good characters, interesting setting, old mystery in a changing world, good dialogue. This is one of the few books I've listened to to completion in quite a while. Tana French has written some of my favorites in this genre - my favorite being Faithful Place, which I have listened to many times.

I wish audible would label inspirational or religious laden literature so I wouldn't have to waste my time returning these books. I'll just have to start looking up the author before I buy a title since audible isn't going to warn me. Amazon at least indicates if an author is a Christian or other inspirational type of writer - much easier to avoid.

It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever. But one person wasn't satisfied with the shockingly high death toll at the DownEast Mall. And as the survivors slowly heal, find shelter, and rebuild, they will discover that another conspirator is lying in wait - and this time, there might be nowhere safe to hide.

I've had trouble getting into any of the storylines I've tried to read or listen to in the past few months. At last a story worth staying up and listening to all night. I'll definitely be looking at other Nora Robert's titles that I haven't bought yet because her writing is far and away better than the last hundred or so books I've tried to get through. She writes so well and her characters and plots keep me listening.

I dislike this kind of writing most of all. Show me, don't tell me, what the character is thinking/doing through their actions, interactions with other characters and their environment, the actions and interactions of other characters, etc. I like a book that makes me feel like I'm watching a movie or play, where I don't know what's going on in the characters' heads - more like life itself.

I dislike this author's style of writing, and it's too irritating to get past the first chapter. I much prefer the style of Dorothy Dunnett and her like. This author's style of writing is too irritating for me to get past the first chapter.

I hate stories where I have to keep a list of characters with their relationship to each other at hand. The mark of a really good writer is that the characters can be easily remembered without a score sheet. Not this story. I don't run into this kind of confusion very often, but when I do, it kills the story.

But the writing was better than average, and I liked most of the main characters. I simply would never have forgiven the actions of one of the major characters.
