Ah, this book is the pits. Someone compared it to Harry Potter and it is the furthest thing from Potter! It is a weak fantasy in a thin fantasy world with an annoying main character.

There are few words that can describe how annoying this book was. There was absolutely no plot to speak of and each character annoyed me to tears.

This book is rich with poetic and musical references, but that is not what makes this one of the most important books of the 19th century. In Daniel Deronda, George Eliot explores how Jewish people lived in England and Spain in the 1800s as well as the prejudices that befell them. She clearly intensely studied Judaism from a religious and cultural point of view and her sympathy towards the Jewish people makes her one of my favorite authors! She also deals with feminist issues and depicts extremely complex and unexpected characters! Loved it with all my heart and soul!

Kate Atkinson's A God in Ruins and Life After Life are twin genius works. Such intelligent novels, peppered with popular and obscure literary, artistic, poetic and musical references. The delicate and gripping story lines are a must read for any novel fan or any fan of WW2 history.

I have never fallen in love with a writer like I have fallen for Alyson Richman. Her writing is magnificent, as it unfolds an incredibly heart wrenching story in the most delicate manner. The themes are purely human. This is the best book I have ever had the honour of reading.
