The murder carries all the hallmarks of one of her most famous incarcerated clients, 'The Playground Killer' (aka Alfred Dinklage). Joe Kenda investigated 387 murder cases during his 23 years with the Colorado Springs Police Department and solved almost all of them. And he is ready to detail the cases that are too gruesome to air on television, cases that still haunt him, and the few cases where the killer got away. These cases are horrifyingly real, and the detail is so mesmerizing you won't be able to turn it off.

This is a perfect example of why authors should not read their own work. Kenda swallows the end of his sentences, has a slight lisp on s sounds and often sounds as bored as I got.

This was one story, good cop/detective gets the bad guy, over and over again. The author has no issues with low self esteem and his ego surfaces over and over again. Enough Joe, we get it.

I received a copy of this book from AudioBoom. I enjoyed the story, looking at racism in a different time period, thru a different lens. I especially liked the idea of the boys' basketball tournament. I would have liked a little more time on character development as I never really knew what was up with some of the characters.

What I really found not only distracting, but incredibly annoying, were the sound effects- the echo effect when a character is "thinking" was horrible and totally unnecessary. I didn't like the effects when speakers were using a microphone, but these were simply distracting, not annoying. Seriously- edit the audio and get rid of those echo effects!

I received a free copy of this audiobook from AudioBoom to review. Opinions are my own.

This felt like a typical noir type of mystery/procedural- not at all a thriller. I liked the narrator's Boston accent. The story went on forever and the convoluted storyline- with a glimpse at the past ( really not necesary), the whole of the race fixing piece, and then the various mafias involved- just way too much. Keep it simple, please.

That said, I listened to the whole thing- liked pieces of it, but probably would not pick up more by this author.

Nicole Nelson and Ahmed Masud are a dynamic, highly successful Philadelphia couple. They are partners in a thriving plastic surgery practice, are very much in love, and they adore their young son, Alex. But cracks are beginning to appear in their fairy-tale life: lingering post-9/11 prejudice against Arab men, accumulating malpractice lawsuits for Ahmed, and most recently, pressure from Ahmed's wealthy family in Cairo for him to return to Egypt - permanently - with his son. The Masud family pressure becomes a demand as the Mubarak regime is seriously threatened by protestors in Egypt.

This was a great listen. I enjoyed both the storyline and the narrator. Will be looking for more from the author.

At first I wasn't sure- thinking that it was far too stereotypical Muslim male dominant characterizations, but the more I listened, the more I realized that it was not just showing the stereotype, but a broader view- a more individualized view. The suspense builds, just when you think they have finally found the boy- just missed him...

Worth the time.
