Joseph Campbell would adore it. Tolstoy would too, as would Judith.
I wonder what mythic clues and connections I missed. Its richness is deeper than I could delve. Maybe after twelve or so re-readings I’ll find bedrock, but one hasn’t done it.

If this will get 8th grade students interested in earth science it would be worth the time. It was "old news" as well as "Old Earth" to me. I was teaching this science 20 years ago to those middle school students. It's ignorant to be teaching it to the graduate students in the story, and insulting to think it has to be taught to any reader who is a high school graduate. The ending is good though, and I liked the nod to the fact of the new atmosphere that was created by by plants. Oh, the old myth of a conflict between religion and science was just boring. One studies Who and Why, and the other studies What, How, And When. Oranges to apples again?

I've read this at least ten times, but not for several decades. What a revelation it is to hear it again as an old woman vs a young one! Hearing allows a different relationship with the text. Thanks to all.

I wish I could have understood what she was saying. I am a southern woman, so the problem wasn't one of accent. Between the cracking voice, sudden drops into near silence, and overwrought emoting, I was able to catch about 70% of the story. I'm afraid that missing 30% might have been important. It occurred at emotional high points in the narrative., which made it especially frustrating.

Should be labeled "for immature audiences only". Can I swap this out for something at least adolescent level? Probably not.

AMS is my favorite living author. I trust everything he has to say. This was totally satisfying, as usual. I pounce on every new thing he publishes.
