Story
Six minutes in the wrong place at the wrong time - that's all it took to ruin Sydney detective Ted Conkaffey's life. Accused but not convicted of the brutal abduction of a 13-year-old girl, Ted is now a free man - and public enemy number one. He flees north to keep a low profile amid the steamy, croc-infested wetlands of Crimson Lake. There, Ted's lawyer introduces him to private investigator Amanda Pharrell, herself a convicted murderer.

When she makes those flippant remarks to her son over coffee one Friday, she has no inkling that within a few hours she will be facing the most terrifying situation of her life.

What a pair these two make. The author brilliantly introduces a fascinating cast of characters, creates a wonderful, picturesque backdrop, and provides plenty of reasons to read the next in the series. The narration is superb. I wanted to hear more! It was short, and the narration went along at a good clip. For the first time, I occasionally slowed it down.

Story
Inspector Thomas Lynley of Scotland Yard and his pugnacious and deeply loyal Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers find themselves up against one of the most sinister murder cases they have ever encountered. Fans of the longtime series will love the many characters from past books who join Lynley and Havers, but listeners new to the series will quickly see why Elizabeth George is one of the most popular and critically acclaimed writers of our time.

Having read many of the author’s books over the years, I opted to listen to her latest. Simon Vance deserves huge praise and a major bonus for his excellent narration of 22+ hours. One expects endless dialogue and detail from George, but she finally went over the top here. The absurd exchanges between the characters were laughable at times. They were distracting and often silly and repetitive. What a waste. I’m only glad I used a monthly credit and did not pay full freight.

The Australian bushland comes to life in this brilliant author’s second novel. It is a captivating story cleverly constructed. The images are still swimming in my thoughts. I have listened to both books on Audible and love the narration. I would imagine that the words leap from the page just as dramatically.

Highly recommended to all. I’m a “woman of a certain age” and have read all of Barry Eisler’s books. Fairly new to Audible, I listened last year to the excellent and very moving author’s narration of Livia Lone — the subject so different from the John Rain trajectory. Thankfully The Night Trade is just as gripping as Livia Lone, with the added dimension of the Dox character you will know from the Rain series (although, Mr Eisler, Dox’s southern twang grows tiring after a bit!).....
