Pete Banning was Clanton's favorite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, a father, a neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning in 1946, he rose early, drove into town, walked into the church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell.

"Have to keep that smile," said Booker Wright in the 1966 NBC documentary Mississippi: A Self-Portrait. For he did the unthinkable: Before a national audience, he described what life was truly like for the black people of Greenwood, Mississippi.

Storyline was interesting and good. Many themes with predictable results. The book would make a good movie.
