Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

Hard Going - Not What I Was Expecting

Overall
3 out of 5 stars

I have to admit to finding this book a hard-slog. I was expecting a fun Oz story like the original books, however, I found the occasional bad language and sexual references too distracting - it just didn't seem to fit well in what was essentially, a children's story-book environment. I realise this is an adult novel, but I just feel Oz is best left in the hands of children's authors - I wasn't keen.

In a voice both haunting and startlingly immediate, Nitta Sayuri describes her life as a geisha. Taken from her home at the age of nine, she is sold into slavery to a renowned geisha house. Witness her transformation as you enter a world where appearances are paramount, virginity is auctioned to the highest bidder, women beguile powerful men, and love is scorned as illusion.

A Fascinating Listen

This was the first download since opening my account with Audible, and I think I made a great choice. The story of Sayuri was fascinating and taught me a lot about Geisha and cleared up some mis-conceptions of this Japanese profession, that I previously had. The narrator had a pleasant voice and told the story well - I found it hard to switch my MP3 player off and incidentally, finished this book in just over a week. Highly recommended.
