In 1942, German subs are dispatched to the Gulf of Mexico to sink U.S. vessels carrying goods and fuel. While taking a late-night walk, Helen Mason - widowed by war - discovers the near-lifeless body of a German sailor. Enraged at the site of Josef Landermann's uniform, Helen is prepared to leave him to die when an unusual phrase, faintly uttered, changes her mind. In The Heart Mender, a small town must prepare itself for the worst the world has to offer, and Josef and Helen must reconcile their pasts to create a future.

Stunning in so many ways. I, too, had no idea of the war information shared in this story. I question why this recounting of history isn't general knowledge . I'm confident that a great many citizens of this country have never heard how the war was in our own waters and on our own shores. What a wonderful insight into the lives of each person involved in this story. The forgiveness. the love, the friendships; as well as the depravity of a few, is skillfully woven in this wonderful book. I highly recommend that you sit and pour over the pages and soak it all in, as much as possible.

This is a gift to those who read it. It is so intricately woven, with characters that are so real, that one cant put it down. This book is a "must read" ...along with the 1st book in the series (please read them both, they are both exceptional). The narrator is wonderful, as she draws the reader into the story. The author...superb!

This author is a favorite. Her ability to weave incidents into each other, develop each character's own story, and the ability to grip one's interest is very skillful! The narrator does a great job. My only complaint is the amount of time that passes from the end of one chapter to the beginning of the next. I literally went to check if the audible book had turned off! i found this very frustrating. Otherwise...a great experience!
