Great narrator. Overall decent story.

But this protagonist spends the entire story getting his rear end kicked and barely making it out of situations. And if he doesn't initially get hurt it's because someone else intervenes. No one ever believes him. He's a liar and a charlatan to everyone and 90% of the characters hate him.

I'm 1/2way through this book and its the same deal as the previous story. Worst luck ever this guy...

Usually when an author completely changes protagonists in the middle of a series the decision is a poor choice. Not so with this book. It's a nice change of pace.

This book explores the lives of the 2 kids that were locked in those cells at the end of book 5. There's a bit of crossover in the middle of the book when Chris comes to save his goddaughter.

The writing and story are solid as always. In fact, I'd say this book is on par with the first couple of books of the series.

If you're a Sanderson fan, this book should keep your interest enough through its entirety. As many reviewers have already mentioned, it's one of his first works and as such not as polished a the Mistborn Series.

I found the pace to be a bit slower than I would typically like. Also, the protagonist doesn't have any particular character flaws nor make many mistakes (the Wesley Crusher of Elantris).

But to mitigate the pace I hit the 2X on the iPOD touch. Once I adjusted to that speed I still found the pace to be too slow.

3X increased the pace of the listen, allowed the story to develop quicker, and probably afforded an additional star in my rating.

1. It was better than the first one.

It's rare that a sequel is better than the original. A lot of the reviews mentioned that they liked this book more.

They're right. But why?

The first book lays down a framework for the series. It also leaves you with more questions than answers.

All of the major mysteries that left you wondering were answered by then end of this audiobok.

tremendous writing. powerful reading. you won't regret this -- especially if you liked the first book

Day 1 is a killer book. Period.

Admittedly I'm only 75% through this book but I feel like the book would be a lot better if it was 25 hrs vs 40+. It starts off well enough but then just draggggs.

For those of you that follow anime this is like a large filler episode.

or

This is kind of like the Silmarillion. It's part of a great work but doesn't really fit in the big picture.

Props to the reader though. He manages to keep an overly long story fairly engaging.

Usually agree

Overall
3 out of 5 stars

Reviewed: 04-02-10

I usually agree with most of the reviewers of an audiobook before I end up buying it. Not so much this time. This story is just "ok".

1) It drags A LOT
2) The antagonists behavior and the protagonist's reaction to it don't really draw me into the story. I think part of the problem is that we don't really get a true sense of who the antagonist is. Something just feels a bit off about the way they interact with each other.
3) The "research" plot line could be eliminated completely. Every time the audio switched over to that story I wanted to rip my eyes out. Also what's with the doubts and questions surrounding homosexuality? It just didn't make any sense, nor did the heterosexuality either. There's no passion of either kind. The author should have just stuck to the magic and left sexuality out; it wasn't believable when it was brought into the story.
3 Stars because:
a) the "magic" part of the book held my interest...
b) the book got better once I hit the 2X speed on my ipod (the narrator is a SLOW reader too)

This is probably one of the best audio books I've listened to in the science fiction genre. I listened to Ender's Game & Shadow before this one and really enjoyed both of those two. But this book combines science (fiction), space/time, metaphysics, and a bunch of other concepts fairly neatly into one story. The story starts out a little slow for me but it may be that I'm less interested in genetics than in other areas covered in the book. It picks up nicely after that.

Definite 5 stars...

Starts out slow. In the beginning there's absolutely no dialogue and a lot of character descriptions -- it seems like hours worth.

Once you get into the characters you realize that there's no redeeming quality about any of them; nothing that really captures and holds your interest; boring dialogue and uninteresting action sequences....

I typically listen to audiobooks during my hr long commutes to and from work. This audiobook has almost put me to sleep on a number of occasions. It is also the 1st book that I decided not to finish. Ugh. Just ugh.
