Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

Would you listen to The Handmaid's Tale again? Why?

I do enjoy "re-reading" books and this is one that I think is worth a 2nd read in the future. There are lessons here in how to treat people and how not speaking up could really lead to a unimaginable future that you would not want for your family. It seems unrealistic at first, but as she describes the slow decline into this society of control, you appreciate the freedoms you have and understand those freedoms come with a requirement to speak up and protect them.

What does Claire Danes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Claire Danes gave a wonderful performance. I even did a search to see if I could find other audiobooks narrated by her because I enjoyed it so much; however, the options are unfortunately limited. I do enjoy just sitting with a book and reading; however, since my schedule is so tight, I have no free time to sit and read. Audiobooks allow me to multitask (i.e. while driving or cooking dinner) and enjoy the thrill of a new story or learning experience.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes!! Typically I will listen while driving to/from work or a bit at night while cleaning up around the house. I'm a working mom with 2 toddlers who is juggling different work shifts with my husband so that our kids aren't in daycare - time is definitely limited. With The Handmaids Tale, I found myself trying to squeeze in a few more minutes every chance I got.

Mackenzie Allen Phillips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation, and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in this midst of his great sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack one wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change his life forever.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. It was such a unique story and really makes you think about the concept of religion as an institution, your relationship with God, and your personal relations with family/friends. Very interesting and wrapped up in characters that draw you in for more. This is likely a story that I will "read" again.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. I found myself trying to squeeze in just a few more minutes every chance that I could. I was eagerly wanting to know what happened next at every turn.

This is one of those milestones that accompany first steps, first words and first tooth. By listening to this book and assisting your child to reaching this milestone, you are paving their way towards success. Sometimes a child's inability to be potty-trained keeps them from entering preschools and daycares and enduring overall moments of embarrassment. One of the greatest concerns of parents is often determining when the correct time is to begin potty training.

What disappointed you about Potty Training Your Child?

The information provided in Potty Training Your Child is very simple common sense. I will confess that I haven't finished the whole book though. Listening is difficult since it feels way too formal for the topic and the content doesn't seem to really help. I'm looking for procedural ways to help my child transition into potty training, not an explanation of the types of toilets for toddlers. Maybe I didn't give the book enough time to get there...we'll see if I go back for more...

Would you be willing to try another one of Claton Butcher’s performances?

Claton Butcher's performance was VERY formal. I felt like I was in a lecture hall, looking around like "are we joking right now"...the topic is "potty training."

I didn't agree with everything, but it made me examine my thoughts and approach. I have applied some of the suggestions and find them helpful. Genuinely enjoyed this book!
