Kevin Taylor is an Internet-famous handyman on a mission: Find a house and renovate it in 30 days. By flipping a derelict house in a month's time and chronicling the entire thing on video for his online subscribers, he seeks to become a star. The problems that plague this property will require more than elbow grease to fix, however. Shadows throughout the home are distorted, and an enigmatic trespasser keeps showing up in his footage. Worse still are the hideous voices that issue from otherwise empty rooms in the dead of night.

Huge fan of Ambrose Ibsen and Joe Hemple.
A descent into madness spiraling from greed and isolation...my favorite.
No one writes this better.
Modern day internet video angle is refreshing from the view of a mature man serious about furthering his career. Especially when mixed with classic renovations/flipping of an older home.
And combined with the low subtle twang of our narrator, we have the usual winning combination.

Totally relate to the MC.
Hard working mother trying to balance family and career while there's a killer on the loose who likes to rip off faces. Okay, maybe not relatable to the face part.
Seemed like a short story that got pulled into a higher word count with filler.

Does the word endometriosis make you want to stick a fork in your eye? No? Then perhaps this book isn't for you. It's funny, and (sometimes alarmingly) frank. It contains an impressive array of synonyms for vagina and it's certainly NSFW. It's about having a devil womb and a hot knife lodged in a shoulder. It's about becoming blackly bitter and twisted in infertility, and then slowly finding a way to untwist. It's part memoir, part dark comedy, wrapped up loosely as a journal full of TMI and quirk.

The Deadfall Hotel is where our nightmares go, it’s where the dead pause to rest between worlds, and it’s where Richard Carter and his daughter Serena go to rediscover life - if the things at the hotel don’t kill them first. Think of it as the vacation resort of the collective unconscious. With the powerful prose that has earned him awards and accolades, Steve Rasnic Tem explores the roots of fear and society’s fascination with things horrific, using the many-layered metaphor of the Deadfall Hotel.

Love the narrator. Matt Godfrey has the perfect young dad voice, but I just didn't like the character. Sure, he's been through a lot in life and is just drifting.
What I did enjoy, however, was the "Shining" vibes mixed with older Hollywood horror. There was just something off, and I can't quite put my finger on it.

Buried, by my family's fame. Dying to escape the limelight, and finally, I do. Being raised as a Jayne, I'm under constant scrutiny. The rock band my brothers formed makes it impossible to stay under the radar. Paparazzi, tabloids, rabid fans - you name it and I've got it. It all makes me sick. But getting shipped off to crazy Aunt Betty's house in my senior year of high school isn't any better. After all, there isn't a stray kid or pet in the world that my aunt wouldn't take in. Then I meet her. She's cautious, suspicious, and not interested in me at all. But that's fine by me.

This was a beautiful and fun story.
The narrator was great! Right up until the crying. Turning what, on paper, would have been a heart wrenching turn of events into a comical melodramatic sobfest. I'm talking a full minute of snot-filled "waaaaaahhh".
I will give this a full five star rating because the story is that good. Like a hug.
And don't get me wrong, Tiffany Marz is a wonderful narrator, and the scene was probably directed that way. Many folks don't realize that.
Just give this a listen for entertainment. A great story. I might pick up a hard copy to read in the future.
