Perched on a hill overlooking San Francisco, the house was magnificent, built in 1923 by a wealthy man for the woman he adored. For her and for this house, he would spare no expense and overlook no detail, from the endless marble floors to the glittering chandeliers. Almost a century later, with the once-grand house now in disrepair, a young woman walks through its empty rooms. Sarah Anderson, a perfectly sensible estate lawyer, is about to do something utterly out of character.

I didn't think I would like this book initially because I was afraid that this book would have sad endings. This book was about despair, trust, respect, judgement, and hope. It was thrilling and kept me on the edge of my seat in many parts. Excellent writing. First read for this auther. I would read him again.

Archaeologist Verity Grey has been drawn to the dark legends of the Scottish Borderlands in search of the truth buried in a rocky field by the sea. Her eccentric boss has spent his whole life searching for the resting place of the lost Ninth Roman Legion and is convinced he's finally found it - not because of any scientific evidence, but because a local boy has "seen" a Roman soldier walking in the fields, a ghostly sentinel who guards the bodies of his long-dead comrades.

I always love the mix of geography, history, and the present in her books, along with some romance, of course. This book was not my favorite of kearsley's novels. For me, it was missing the suspense and surprise at the end that I usually enjoy; but still, very entertaining.

Make sure that you listen to "the winter sea" by Susan Kearsley before this one. I tried to listen to Firebird first and i just could not get started. Knowing that I was intrigued by this author, I listened to "The Winter Sea" and it all made sense to me. These two stories tell a beautiful story. The narrator is excellent. Listen to them both you'll be glad you did.

First, she imagined it. Then a killer made it real. Rowan Smith is living in a borrowed Malibu beach house while her bestselling novel is made into a Hollywood movie. A former FBI agent with a haunted past, Rowan thinks she has outrun her demons. But fiction and reality collide when a dismembered body is found in Colorado: the real-life victim had the same name, occupation, and looks as a character in Rowan's novel.
